College fiasco

Well, here it is. I thought that it would be nice to make a cake for a class at school. I made the cake in advance and leveled it, (a 12" square) and was going to ice it the night before class. I put too much batter in the pan so it overflowed all over the oven. I ended up having to do something that night so needless to say, I didn' t get it done. I put the cake in the freezer till I could get to it. I finally found time yesterday afternoon so I took the cake out of the freezer to thaw, made my filling and prepared my BCT. When the cake thawed, I torted it but the cake was sitting at a weird angle so when I cut it, one side ended up being paper thin. icon_cry.gif
I had to start all over again. I got cake #2 baked and out to cool. Thought I'd check on the filling so I took it out of the fridge and beat it with the mixer. The filling got all chunky icon_mad.gif I think the cream in it became butter!! So, while I'm waiting for the cake to cool, I make a new batch of filling and make some flowers. My kitchen was hot, so the flowers kept falling over. My DH felt bad for me and found me a fan. I got the cake halfway iced and ran out of icing!! icon_evil.gif Right about now, I'm ready to cry so I go to make more icing and realize that I don't have any butter softened! I used crisco instead so the color of the sides didn't match the top. I put my BCT on the cake and it cracked. I got the cake decorated and got to bed around 12. It ended up being a hit in class though. Thought you guys might get a laugh and I'll post a pic later.

Wow, that sounds REALLY frustrating! I'm glad it turned out alright in the end though. You must have a lot of patience to keep on trying through all that. I can't wait to see a picture!

So glad to hear it all came out okay eventually. That's Murphy's law in action. What can go wrong will go wrong. I think I'd just want to run away from home. Anxious to see you pic.

Welcome to the club!!! This is the way most of us learn, believe me I went through alot of these troubles. I would suggest that next time you mark the cake with toothpicks where you'll be dividing the cake to prevent dividing it unevenly. Also, you can "glue" it with thinned icing. I've done it and to this day haven't heard of a complaint. I make at least eight batches of icing before decorating my cakes so I don't run short ot it. Please post "College Fiasco" here for us to see. Good luck next time and don't you ever give up!!!!

Whew...just reading what you went through made me want to cry. I would have for sure! What a relief the cake was a hit! Just a tip on bringing butter to room temp, if you cut the block into about 10 pieces and put it in a bowl, it'll come to temp in about 10 minutes. I've also been know to put mine in my mixer bowl and set it on the warm stove (it worked but you don't want melted butter...just soft).

Wow! That sounded horrific!! But I can feel your pain. I am glad that it all came together in the end. Beside, who doesn't like cake?? I would love to see the pics you took. Just know that we have all had our worst days when it comes to baking. I am amazed that you kept at it. But when you think about it, it really is just cake. That way it won't drive you mad when everything goes the way it shouldn't!!

Wow, that was a very trying experience, it sounds like!! So glad you stuck with it and got it done! I love the BCT on that! Is that bird a character from a show or where did you find him?

I torte pretty much every cake I make, even Character cakes. Am I alone in that?

Hugs,

I only tort character cakes if the customer wants to pay extra for filling!! So, I have done it before and it makes the cakes much higher and more substanstial looking!
