I made about 50 pearls for a wedding cake, and I attached them while they were still soft.
Should I attach them when they're soft or is it better to let them harden a bit?
I painted them with the pearl luster dust while they were still soft on the cake -- should I wait until they are harder?
REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION:
Will water keep fondant pearls attached to the cake? (they are also sitting on the edge of a square cake plate). Or, should I use something else to attach the pearls?

I just made some also. I didn't "paint" each one individually. I dropped them into a little plastic container with the pearl dust inside and rolled them around until they were covered.

sonoma,
I think I would let them dry as the shape may change if they are soft. If you are attaching to buttercream, I would use a small dot of buttercream. If you are attaching to fondant, vanilla or water would work. If you are going to "paint" them, I am not sure if it matters but you may lose some of your paint if you paint them first and then place them on the cake as it may rub off.
Did you coat them with dry luster dust?
I mixed mine with a little vodka.
Does luster dust stay on if put dry???
I dust my pearls with dry dust... I just like the way it looks. It give them just enough shimmer. Did you make your pearls individually?? Did you know they make molds for pearls and you can make 6" strands at one time? I made pearls individually one time and then I bought the molds. So much quicker!! I put the fondant in the mold, cut off the excess, pop the pearls out, dust them with pearl dust (dry) and pop them on the cake. The molds are a little pricey, but worth it. You'll save a lot more time using them.

Oh where, oh where can I get one of these molds??? Yes, I made them by hand, and I quickly realized that it was way tooooooo tedious!

Here's a cake I did using the mold.. I think I used the largest mold they have for this cake.

Beautiful cake! And, I love the pearls! I will try dusting them dry as well as painting. I liked the painted look, but they may have come out with too much color. Didn't notice much when I tried to dust them with a brush though -- will try the bag idea. Thanks!
