Here's another one.
This is the first cake I ever made. It was for my DD's first birthday. I was so proud of it. Notice the pyrex dish. The bear looks almost evil. Everyone said it was cute, but ehhh. I remember trying to cut the fat by cutting out some of the butter in the buttercream. I didn't know anything then. That is why it looks like the bear has been in a rainstorm...oh and we won't talk about the red handwriting.
OMG toristreats your bear has two black eyes! What type of beating did you give it!
[OMG toristreats your bear has two black eyes! What type of beating did you give it!]
Naah, she didn't beat the bear, but I have to wonder what the heck kinda dirt is responsible for the brown panda. [/quote]
I see a pattern here, heads without bodies and purple swimmers without heads. Interesting, very interesting...........it truly makes you wonder where those body parts are In the guppy shark perhaps
It's like the old Saturday Night Live skit but instead of Land Shark it's Guppy Shark!!!!
It's all the poor sweet old guppy sharks fault. ( Someone must get all the blame.)
Edited to say:
MissT.... Then I must think of a poem .....
The day it snowed in the middle of the summer in Botswana...

I just gave my panda a mud bath that's all...
mkerton: You are right that 3D bear pan is evil. I have had a lot of trouble with it.
I was at the zoo with my family yesterday. when we got to the woodchucks, i remembered this thread, and smiled. My dh wanted to know what was so funny, but when i tried to explain, he just looked at me funny... oh, well...
I've been lurking for a very long time and I have REALLY enjoyed this post. I visit about once a week to see the new entries. I figure it is time to own up to my own worst cake
This was, I'm embarassed to say, a completely original design based upon one of the Hello Kitty characters, Choco Cat. I had been wanting to make Choco Cat into a cake for quite a while but had not completely thought out the design. I ended up making this cake in one afternoon while fending off a 3 yr old, a 9 yr old, a cat and a dog from eating to much cake batter, icing, fondant, etc. Two lessons learned (1) I can complete a project under much duress and (2) I should never, ever, ever trust my own instincts for design and color (I have found that it is better to seek inspiration from those that are wiser than I am).
Poor, Choco Cat. He came out cross-eyed. And what was I thinking with the blue mice. Not to mention the orange . . . sooooo much orange.
Mkerton you are too kind. Did you notice how orange this cake was? I had taken a closeup picture of one of the mice. Looking at it now, with the really unsmooth icing, it looks for all the world like the mouse is running across a hunk of cheese! What's more, the buttercream was shiny so the whole thing kind of glowed. I like orange but I've decided that it is best used as an accent color.
I really love this topic. It gives me hope. Seeing some of the cakes that are less than perfect that are being posted and then seeing where you all are now shows me that you didn't ALL wake up one morning deciding to go into cake decorating and then create a perfect cake that afternoon. It's a process and it is so important for us newer decorators to remember that all it takes is practice, practice, practice! Artistic background / talent would be helpful for sure, but even for those of us that lack it, we can still make pretty cakes if we work hard enough.
Aztec, that's a cute little cake! Great color scheme. However, I must admit that Nemo seems to be . . . every so slightly . . .just a tiny little bit . . . . ANGRY!
I think he looks more like he's in pain...broken fin or something like that, maybe he's had a little digestive problems and needs to pass gas...
Thanks Caketopper!!
I need to get some sleep, it's 11:20pm here in Texas, but I can't get away from this site...
Keep on baking!!
Cindy
I have to agree with CakeTopper Nemo seems just a little bit angry. My little one says he look very, very, very angry. (She thinks it is because he have to swim with the sharks! )
I agree the Choco Kitty is cute caketopper- we really are our own worst critics.
Aztec I think that the guppy shark must have been chasing Nemo to make him that angry!!
ckkerber: artistic background might help, but not for sure. i am very artistic, but it does not translate easily onto cakes - it does not help with smoothing icing, and it is much harder to draw with an icing bag than with a pencil, and easier to correct mistakes!!
Nemo's just angry because he's missing a fin. He's saying where's my little fin. I want my little fin...maybe guppy shark ate it.
I like the little paper presents underneath the tree. That is definitely a nice touch.
