Used this tip this weekend to make a "welcome mat" cake (the brown crunchy kind). It worked for that, but when playing with it- it didn't seem to make longer grass. Does it normally do this, or was it just the type of icing we used (the chocolate syrup icing recipe from this site- YUM by the way!!!).

Would love to use this as a border for the cake I'm doing on Saturday, but would like longer grass. Any ideas?

TIA,
Suz

Make sure the icing is not too soft and then use it like a pull out star...you just squeeze it out like you would a star tip but instead of stopping, you continue to squeeze while you pull away.

How long the grass is depends on how stiff the icing is...not so stiff it won't come out, but stiff enough that it won't bend over right away. You probably can't get it SUPER long but you could get it about an inch tall if you had the right icing.

I love the grass/fur tip. thumbs_up.gif

I figured it was the icing. It's super good, but not so great for decorating. It did wonderfully on the welcome mat.

I've actually made long hair with it before. The icing should be pretty soft and pliable and you need to use strong, even pressure until you have the length you want.

the tip they are referring to just looks like a thimble with a bunch of small holes poked in the top of it....

I have used a tiny bit of piping gel to a medium to stiff consistency icing and the results are pretty good for a longer grass and I have made hair with this too!

I've never had a problem with my grass/hair tip. I use it to make grass skirts on my doll cakes and that's really long grass icon_biggrin.gif
Just make sure your icing is not too stiff and keep squeezing as you pull away.
good luck and keep practicing!
