Hello all! It's been ages since I've logged into CC! Sure missed being here. Is the old gang still here? Squirrellycakes? TC Turtleshell?

I wondered if anyone had ever tried to 'paint' a fondant character with Wilton Paste colors? I made a bird shape with white fondant and want to make it look like a black-capped chickadee..going to try painting it with coloring just like a water color. don't know if it will work. Anyone else ever try this?

Thanks much icon_smile.gif

Yep! I painted my beer barrel cake in my gallery with brown wilton gel color and some anise, though vodka or any clear extract can be used. It should work great. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks Ferret! I used Smirnoff Raspberry Twist Vodka and it worked beautifully (well, at least as good as my novice fondant painting skills could master). icon_smile.gif Here are my freshly painted chickadees...wish I'd had more time to work on them but I have to get this cake done TODAY! Thanks again icon_biggrin.gif

The birds look great!

This technique offers so many possibilities. Do you just mix the paste coloring with the alcohol until it is the color you are looking for and then paint it on?

Hi! Thanks icon_smile.gif Yes, I just took a toothpick and put some paste on a plate and mixed it with a couple of drops of the vodka. It is very similar to watercolor painting...luckily I have a little experience with it (I painted my avatar pic). I think this is going to be a technique I really like.

I paint with colourings all the time on my fondant plaques - I liken it to using water colours!

I got it...you just use a few drops of alcohol to thin the paste and then paint with it. Thanks for clarifying.

I think that I will like this technique a lot once I get to try it. I am a high school art teacher. I do a lot of drawing and some painting....when I can find the time.

yes, it's very much like watercoloring and just as beautiful too. I wish I had taken photos of the paintings I have done on my cookies but stupidly I didn't. I was too lazy and now regretful after seeing all the beautiful work shown here. Its a mistake I won't repeat again.

Like someone mentioned you can use vodka...I use Everclear. For me...the Everclear seems to dry the food coloring much faster and I can move on to another color. I really don't know what the difference is, maybe just a slight higher alcohol content. (humidity here is h@*^ sometime) You can also use the same method when you paint on chocolate, a second passion of mine. I have a photo of that but can't upload it since I am at work.

I use a ceramic plate like a artist palet for the gel food coloring. Dip the brush into a small bowl of vodka/Everclear and mix with the color you want to use. Exactly like you would do if you were actually painting. No different. Easy, beautiful and really fun to work with. Best part is..... You can eat the mistakes!

The birds turned out wonderfully. I can't wait to see what else comes along.

Happy painting

Someone said lemon extract works really well, too. Do you know if any of these leave a taste if you color large amounts of MMF on a cake?

Lemon extract works too, and no the alcohol doesn't taste. That is why I like to use it. It evaparates... sometimes faster then you want it too. icon_wink.gif

don't use around an open flame if you use everclear. You may not have eyebrows left. icon_lol.gif

I use vegetable oil...it seems smoother (not as streaky) and seems to dry a less sticky than with alcohol, maybe it's the proportion I'm using. I saw it on a famous cake decorator's website and thought I'd try it out.

when I used the lemon extract I had some tell me they didn't like the combination of chocolate chip and Lemon. bluhhhh... Others said they couldn't taste it. When I used Vodka and Everclear no one said anything about it. icon_lol.gif

Now sugar cookies and lemon....mmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe they were overly happy after eating the Everclear painted cookie to remember the taste? mwuahahah ( Just kidding) icon_biggrin.gif

*Joking aside: alcohol completly evaporates. If you are uneasy about using it then please don't*

Sorry to butt in...don't have suggestions, just a question.

Tanyap...
I've tried the lemon extract, didn't care for it. Hadn't heard about the vegetable oil. What proportion do you use????

Thanks Stephanie... daughter found the avatar and said it's what I look like me when I didn't get my daily coffee transfusion. (All day long)

The everclear.... well... I have to hide it from my hubby when he runs out of charcoal fluid, he threatens to use it. icon_lol.gif
