While everyone is on the topic..... I did two cakes last week for my coworker. I charged her only $15 per 11x15 cake!!!! WAY TOO CHEAP. When she first ordered the cakes they were to be very basic with writing and flowers. The order got changed and I didn't up the price(my fault). But when I called around to get an idea of what a basic cake sells for Walmart told me $12.99 for a basic and others said $14.99. So that is where I came up with my price. So could you please send me a price guide as well? alicia_froedge@hotmail.com People are starting to pass the word on about me and others are asking me to do cakes. I have several orders just for May. My biggest problem is that we are a small town in Indiana and would people flip over how much I am charging them? ???

Ok, since you are sending out the list, could I have it also? It's hard where I live too to figure out pricing. The only "bakerys" are in supermarkets or mega stores! Thanks!

It's really hard as a beginner to price things. Obviously I do things much slower so I can't really price my time. It depends a lot on where you live to. We have a grocery store here that charges only a couple dollars more than the other groceries and their cakes taste great. The decorating could be better, but you get a pretty good cake for very little. When we lived in Houston the Sam's we shopped at had a killer chocolate cake (but not the one here), so how can you compete with the prices.

I haven't looked at any of the smaller bakeries around here. I don't have time to do many cakes so I don't worry about it too much. My very first cake I "sold" I charged $20. It was a 9x13 and the groceries charge $18 and I figured homemade was worth at least $2 LOL. My next one was the same size and I charged $25 because I use cream cheese in my icing and I realized after the first cake I was barely covering cost. The guy gave me $30 and seemed happy to do it.

Can I jump on the band wagon and get a copy also? I found a site once that had a price guide, but I can't find it again. What I have done to price my cakes is endless searches of bakery prices and online food mailer guides. I think I have done pretty well. I do mostly 3-d and specialty cakes with fillings, so my basic cake starts around $25...but if I ever do a "regular" cake, I would need something to go by to price it out!
