I have a request for a Dale Earnhardt cake for March 15th. Originally I thought I'd just take a sheetcake and cut, stack, and shape it to look like a car, then frost it. Still might do that, but just found a couple sites online that sell a NASCAR cake kit. I don't really want the entire kit, just the pan. I'm wondering if anyone out there has a used NASCAR pan they'd be willing to part with? The one I'm looking at appears to not be a Wilton pan. icon_rolleyes.gif

The kits are cool, with edible decals and all, but they also come with their own cake mix and frosting, something I certainly wouldn't be inclined to try. The perfect fit would be if I could somehow just buy the pan and the decals, but haven't found this anywhere. Because this is sold as a kit, it's a little pricy, so if I could just buy the pan off someone that would help. icon_rolleyes.gif

If I end up doing the sheetcake thing... I'll need a few prayers! I'm worried about getting the shape right, but also about how to decorate it well. Seems like there's a lot to those cars! A lot of detail that is. I wouldn't be able to do it all, just the important features that make it identifiable as Dale's car. icon_lol.gif

If anyone wants to see the cake kit, the cheapest I found it was here:
http://www.sell.com/2KRNG there are a few other sites that sell it too... another is: http://www.sportcakes.com/products.asp?id=36 . Whatever I end up doing I'll post it on my site when it's done! thumbs_up.gif

You can get a race car cake pan at any party store or craft store for about $10 and it has a checkered flag in the back of the car you can decorate it to look like Dales car. Inthe children's birthday cakes I have one done ( not in dales car ) but the cake.

I've seen that too and I like the pan... looks cool with the flag behind the car, but my customer wants a 3 Dimensional race car... so, don't think it would appeal to her. Thanks for the idea though! Appreciate it! thumbs_up.gif

I think your best bet will to do the race car cake from the wilton pan (the one CakeBakingGurl was talking about. I have done that one in the Earnhardt car and it turned out great. It will be a lot easier than what you're looking for, unless you just really want to do a 3D.

I have one of these right now. I have it for my sons birthday as he wanted a Jeff Gordon car. I bought the whole kit. Unfortunately his b-day is the 13th and I will need the cake pan for it. I do not plan on using the icing or cake mix that came with it...they do not look very tasty icon_smile.gif

I bought it from here: http://www.flag2flag.net/cakes.htm and they were great. They also sell just the decals so if you have the cake pan you can reuse it at a later time for other drivers.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. Looks like I'm going to have to shape the car from a sheetcake. My biggest frustration now is the fact that this cake is going to be black! Not pretty at all.

Do you all think it would look better to cover a car cake in fondant rather than buttercream? If so, what medium should I use to write with? I need to write out Goodyear and the #3... any ideas?

why don't you see if you can just get ahold of the decals you would need....save yourself a ton of trouble.....or order an edible image with all the decals on it from online or something.....then cut them and place them in the appropriate place.

Do you know where I could order edible images? I'm having a hard time trying to find an online site that provides them. Do any of them customize?

I'm pretty sure www.sugarcraft.com does them you just give them the photo......luvalot listed the website that has the decals for THAT cake you were looking for, she said you could just order the decals....did you check that out???

Here you go.....http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/novelties/jefgordon/jefgordon.htm

they sell the car pan separately for 11.99 if you're interested and it says they have the decals by themselves too.

I checked out the site luvalot recommends, but don't see anywhere to order just the decals. I've emailed the store to ask if they'd sell just the decals, so we'll see what happens there. icon_lol.gif

Are you sure that sugarcraft would copy these images for me? Seems like there would be some sort of copyright laws to be concerned about? If not, then my grocery store could probably do it too. Just doesn't seem like something they'd be willing to do. icon_rolleyes.gif

Wow, that's expensive. icon_rolleyes.gif They sell the decals and the spoiler for $25 and the pan is the Wilton style with the flag behind it. Doesn't appear they sell the pan I'm looking for separately. icon_cry.gif Thought we were on to something. I'm just going to have to get creative with this one. icon_rolleyes.gif

THANKS for the information!!! icon_biggrin.gif

no no no they do I saw it on there it's 11.99 and I think the decals were like 6.00 or something....it's on there right under where you read for the decals and the spoiler ....it says race car (pan only)the third oneI think is the one you want isn't it?? It doesn't have a photo but it says it's the same pan that's included with the kit...i"m sorry it's 12.99

Ok, I see the pan for $12.99... and it does say it's the same as in the kit. I don't see the decals for $6 though. Sorry, I don't want to seem like a ditz, but I've studied the page and can't find it! icon_sad.gif

I see certain edible images for that price, but not the ones for the car.

I wonder if I just order the pan, if I could maybe turn around and sell it on Ebay? Based on the shipping info, looks like it would be hard to get this before the 15th. icon_rolleyes.gif

not a problem....I think all they have are the ones that say they are "edible images " and then they have the nascar flag and they also have the appropriate car numbers.....yeah, I don't know if those will work they look kinda big 4 and 3/4 by 4 and 3/4...that's probably too big for the car....um....what about the round cupcake decals?? Oh wait it actually says, great for your car shaped cake ...so maybe that' swhat you want
