I'm looking for a cardboard cupcake stand. Has anyone ever tried making one themselves out of cardboard stacked boxes or anything else creative ? I know I can buy one for $30.00 but are they reusable? I'm making cupcakes and a cake topper for an engagement party (for a friend) and I'm trying to save $ .

Yes, they can be reused a few times! Just put doilies under your cupcakes so it doesn't get all oily, and save the box it comes in so you can store all of the pieces neatly!

I have one that I got from cupcaketree.com. I've used it about 10 times. each time I line the cardboard with wrapping paper that matches the theme and colors. ( I get the paper from the dollar tree) then I hot glue ribbon around the edges to dress them up. I have pictues of the last 2 I did, but I havn't scanned them yet. I will try to post them tomorrow.

I've just put in an order for an Acrylic one, the cardboard was going to cost me 80 by the time I got it transported to Ireland and I found a company who will do me an 8 Tier Acrylic Stand working out at 147.00, which I know is a fair difference in price but the Acrylic should be everlasting.

I've seen someone (can't remember where) make one using covered cardboard circles and the clay flower pots. They got different sizes of the clay pots, turned them upside down and used hot glue to attach the card board to the pots, stacking as they went. I also think they used ribbon around the edges to dress it up a little bit.

I've also seen the clay pots. But they bought glass to put the cupcakes on. It worked great.

But probably over your price range. But it is re-usable!

wow never would have thought about the clay pot idea.. I have a store near me.. Called Norma Stones.. (items like garden ridge.. only smaller)She has plastic (thick) plates.. But the only problem I have is I am in need of a 14" or bigger plate for the bottom. She carries sizes 12, 10 and 8. She also has the clear tubes that fit in the center of the plates.. Those are like 12" long.. The plates even have scalloped edges.. Still thinking I can make one myself, instead of ordering the cardboard one.. This is what I was planning on doing Thurs. There are so many ways of going around this.. Now just figuring out which one works best!

But this is too kiddy for theTower I need.. I need to incorporate the colors: baby blue, sage green, lavender and light pink.. Cinderella theme.. I hate themes!!!!!!!!
I was thinking about using some dangly diamond ribbon.. I found some at wal mart.. Something sparkly for the edges..Placing the dangly ribbon just below colored ribbon.. (to match colors I mentioned) And If I make the tower myself, I was thinking of going with the plates and tubes I found at Norma Stones.. Just wrapping the clear tubes with some white fabric.. man I just need to jump into it.. The thing is I am waiting on the deposit for this cake.. They have until Friday.. After that , I cannot do it!! Time is precious.. And I dont have time to mess with undecided people.. Wont go through another "undecided family member" again.. No Money, No Cake!!!

I just love the look of the clay pot tower for the baby shower theme.

I have at home a couple of acrylic pieces cut to size which I use as plates (double cardboard has worked as well) and then divide them using a 4-inch wide PVC pipe. It works pretty nicely and it is very stable. Once you put them in place they are not going anywhere but, if you don't feel safe, you can use some double sided or mounting tape to secure them in place.

You can wrap the PVC in color gift paper or in any other type of paper you like to go with your cake. I don't have pictures here with me 'cause I'm at work right now but here is the idea.

You could also try making a cardboard cupcake stand. It is not a big deal. You can use hard cardboard material for building the stand and then you can use glazed printed papers over it and paste ribbons or laces around the corner.
 

Heavy, wider at the top than the bottom drinking glasses work as well.

I have created an impromptu three tier cupcake stand with those and pretty glass plates, use blu-tack or similar to hold them in place temporarily.

cake dummies can also stand in for the supports between your rounds. I'd use cake drums in a pinch.
