i'm thinking of getting a few more shaped/character pans to add to my collection. i'd like to know which pans are your favorites so i have an idea which ones to get next time.

so far, here are my top five favorites:

1. mini tiered cakes
2. sports ball
3. 3d cuddly bear
4. animal crackers*
5. butterfly*

*haven't got these yet... planning to get them, though icon_wink.gif

apart from the regular round, square, and sheet pans, what are your favorite shaped pans? which ones are the most useful to you? which ones have the best value for your money and why?

thanks for your time, everyone! icon_biggrin.gif

I would think the sports ball (if there are alot of sports fans in your life) as it can be made several different ways; and also the standing bear as it can be made into several different color/types of bears, and with a little creativeness, maybe other animals. Unfortunately I have neither, but someday......

HEART PAN - I have seen it used to create all sorts of things that have nothing to do with hearts
T SHIRT PAN - As it can make all sorts of clothing items
CASTLE PAN - it could be anything from a home, to an enchanted castle to haunted house or building.
3 D CRUISER PAN - If you make kids cake this can be turned into a zillion cars, trucks or even planes if you are creative.
OVAL can look so beautiful but is under used.

I also love the butterfly but not overly versatile.

I only ever buy ones that can be made into 3 or 4 different things, for the others I hire them... really cheap and you don't have to store them.

I thought I needed all of them. I have way too many. They take up alot of room in storage. Most I have only used a few times at best! I use the basics round ,square, and oval. I do like the sports ball too. My shaped faves are, mini doll pan, heart, wonder mold (big doll).
Since BCT and carved cakes, I've started using those option much more now to save $. I have the 3-d bear, but I've found it too time consuming and hard to explain best way to slice. Never seems to serve very many either, I guess because of the odd shape. You end up with cake in the middle with no icing.

I love doing 3-D cakes so for me the 3-D Cuddley Bear Pan and the 3-D Lamb pan are great and can be turned into so many other things.

I also love the heart pans all sizes as these are also very versatile for making different cakes.

3-D Sports Ball pan is another favorite.

Wonder mold and mini wondermolds are probably the next most versatile.

I collect ideas for these pans whenever I see a new one that I like.

What I esspecially like is using pans for different things, ie: Dora pan also makes a great shape for a penis cake, Did my tiger cubs with the lamb pan, Made a wolf the the Bear pan. So for me I decide if the shape is versatile irregardless of the character it is supposed to be, most of my character pans have never been used for the actual character they are.

I also love finding mini pans at garage sales and second hand stores as these little pans shapes are great additions to 3-D cakes for various parts.

Always need the basics (rounds, sheets, etc.) One smart way of buying character pans, I think... is to buy pans that would be hard to make without it! Example... tough to make a 3-D ball (unless you have a round bottomed metal mixing bowl to bake in). A couple of pans that are neat to have in my opinion are: sportsball, wonder mold, 3-D cuddly bear, and as far as characters go: little hero (nice basic people shape), Rocking Horse is nice for baby showers and makes a cute horse for birthdays too. Go with very multi-use characters because when you get a butterfly.. well... it's a butterfly unless you have more imagination. Most characters can be drawn (free hand, rice paper, butter cream transfers etc) and filled in on a sheet cake and they are just as cute! Good luck.. and have fun, hope I helped some, - Amy
