Questions For Those Of You Who Have Taken Wilton I Class:
Decorating By ge978 Updated 6 Mar 2006 , 2:40pm by TexasSugar
Actually I have a few questions:
Can anyone tell me whats on the supply list, what age do you have to be to take this class, & what do they cover?
I think it would be something fun for me & my 8 year old daughter to do together, but I wasn't sure if she was old enough.
If anyone can answer 1 or all of these questions it would be much appreciated. The store is closed & I kind of wanted to know before tomorrow. Thanks!
I believe your daughter needs to be at least 16 - they should have told you that before you signed up and paid for the class (we had to do this ahead of time). As far as supplies, just bring a pencil and notepad as the first class you basically take notes and the teacher will let you know what to bring for the second meeting. You will need to purchase a Course 1 kit however. Belive me, you will really enjoy this; I am starting Course 3 this week and can't belive how much fun I am having.

My 16 year old daughter and I just finished Wilton 1 and start 2 this coming week. I was unaware of an age stipulation. Sorry to hear that. Maybe YOU could take the class and re-teach what you learn to your daughter. Yes, just a pen and paper and the Student kit are required for the first class. Your teacher will tell you what is needed for each following week.
Thanks for the fast reply guys. I kind of thought she was too young for the class, but I wasnt sure. I haven't signed up or even called about the class, I was just thinking about it tonight & wanted a quick answer. Thank you.
I know for the whole course you will need the course 1 kit, icing colors, bags, practice board, waxed paper, parchment paper, toothpicks, flower nail, pipping gel...That is all I can think of right now. I know different places have different policies about children in the class. It all depends on the instructor and the store the class is in. Keep in mind that you will have to bring 2 cakes to class each week and you'll have to buy 2 of everything. Good luck with the classes they are so much fun.
You are very welcome. Check my photos and you can see my (valient) attempts at the final cakes for Courses I & II.
If you can attend them, by all means do so!

there was an 11 year old girl in my class, and she was taking the class with her mother. She did very well, the only hard part for her was dealing with the frustration of trying the rose for the first time. I know a lot of stores offer shorter kids sessions that teach how to do basic things.
Around my area I know kids are welcome in class. I would suggest calling the store you were looking at taking classes at and asking. My guess is it depends on the instructor.

The above link is to a list of what is in the Student Kit. I just finished course 1 last week and I had enough decorating items already that I didn't have to buy the kit. In the book you get in class in the back it has the practice cards. All I did was cut them out and laminate them, as this was the only thing in the kit I didn't have (along with the easel to put the cards on, but I just did it right on the laminated card itself.) So I would see if you have enough for the both of you to take the class, this would also help cut down the cost since there are two of you.

Have fun, can't wait to see the cakes you two make!
Yah - I'd call and inquire... I know the Wiltons over where I am actually have a cake decorating class designed just for kids
The age would depend on the instructor. I have had several kids under 16 in my classes and they did great. I know the instructor before me said that if the kids were old enough to make their icing and such then she would teach them.
As far as what you have to have the Course 1 kit, meringure powder, decorating bags are in my opinion the must haves. Of course I could give you a list of lots of other things that you may want to purchase.
I had a 9 year old girl in my class - she took it with her mother - they shared their supplies and worked together on their cakes although they both paid for their registrations. I think it was something the mom wanted to do with the daughter although I sensed that she would have probably gotten more out of it if she had been alone - but the 9 year old had a good time and the class was not disrupted because of her age.
Thank you guys for all of your suggestions and replies. I'll have to call & ask Joann's about their polices. I was only thinking of taking the class if I could do it with my daughter. She would probably do very well in the class...she already knows how to use the decorating bags & can make icing.I'm not really a class person myself, but I could really benefit from learning how to make flowers & work with fondant.
Deb, I checked out your cakes & they look great!
Thanks again everyone!

I don't think there's an age stipulation. I guess it would all depend on the store, the instructor and the maturity of the kid.
As long as the kid is not disruptive I don't see it being an issue. It's not like she's working with heavy duty machinery other than your KA at home LOL...
Call them in the morning and find out. The worse that could happen is you will end up teaching her at home.
Have fun at class!
When I took course 2, it was only myself and 2 girls around 13 years old. They did very well, but 8 might be a little young. I think it depends on your daughter, the instructor and the other adults in the class. My course 1 was a very large class and a very diverse group. I'm not sure that class would have been appropriate for an 8 year old!
Ditto on checking with the store and the instructor herself about your daughter taking the class with you. My guess is if the instructor is ok with it, the store will be too. And if you do take the class with your daughter, call the instructor before your first class to see if you will be actually decorating on the first night, as opposed to just taking notes, etc. With my instructor we started decorating a cake the very first night. Each instructor is a little different, from what I've read here at CC. So better to check with her first rather than show up without a cake or supplies and they're actually doing a cake that night...lol.
I agree w/ Cake_Princess. There wasn't any age stipulation when I took classes. My daughter took the 1st Course with me. She was 14 at the time. There was also another daughter & mom team in our class. That girl was 12. The instructor we had was so excited to have 2 mom & daughter teams & then 2 other girls that were 17 in her class. She said it's not often that the younger generation is interested in cake decorating. She was so happy to teach any age that was willing to try. My daughter didn't take Course 2 & 3 with me because of her involvement with the Fire Dept. I bet the teacher will be happy to have your daughter in her class~ You'll have to take pics & do a scrap book. What a wonderful memory this will be for you & your daughter!
Thank you so much everyone for your advice & help!! I honestly think my daughter would do very well in the class..she is very mature for her age & follows instructions very well. I just thought she would enjoy hanging out with me learning to decorate. I think I will definitely call & talk to the instructor and see how she feels about it. Thanks again!
There was an 8 year old in my class with her mom. She did wonderful! She was even doing better than some of the adults. The instructor didn't mind at all and was happy that someone so young was interested in cake decorating.
I am an instructor. I am as I type looking through my info.
BTW Did you know wilton has a KAKES FOR KIDS COURSE??
I will get back to you if I find ithe nfo
llee815: I just know if I take the class with my daughter she is going to get the hang of roses way before me
ShelbysYummys: Thank you for taking the time to look!! I think I might call & talk to the instructor and see how they feel about it.
Thanks again guys!!
As far as I know there really isn't a 'rule'. It is my understanding it is up to the teacher and the store (more the teacher as she is the one teaching the class.)
Michaels does have a Kakes for Kids class, but I haven't had luck with it making at my store. It is also a one time class and would focus more on what is learned in Lesson 2 which is the stars and outlining.
You know your daughter best, so as long as the teacher is okay with it, you would know how she would like the class, behave in the class and so forth.
