Do you mean like Pastillage plaques? There was just a show on the food network on Sugar Rush about a pastry chef who makes pastillage plaques, then paints "watercolor" like paintings on them.

Dern! I always miss the good shows. I'm not sure izzybee. I have looked at a few cakes on CC, last one was done by, boween, that have them on the cakes. They look like perfect images that stand up, 3-d style on the cake.

You can do them a few ways depending on the look. You can do them with color flow. You can also do some fondant with gum tex or gumpaste rolled out and dried.

I use fondant to make mine. I'm not sure if Boween uses fondant or gumpaste or pastillage for hers. Her cakes are great!

ok... another example of different countries referring to different things

I meant the plaques that are used for writing messages on... in various shapes.

You can do a solid color color flow piece. After it is dried you can go back and write on it with the food writer markers or pipe your letters in royal icing. The shape you do is only limited to your imagination.

You can also do fondant plus gum tex or gumpaste. Roll it out, cut it out on the shape that you want and let it dry for several days. You can also use the food writer markers or icing to write your message. Or even luster dusts.

Here is a color flow piece I used as a message bubble. icon_smile.gif Is this more like what you are talking about?

no not it either. If you have a look at Boweens cakes she often has a plaque or tag leaning on the board or on the cakes that say happy birthday or something similar. I have a few plaque cutters and have done a couple but hers look like swags.. they are just too cute and I wanted more info on those.

Like on my latest cake - she used a fondant or similar to make the plaque. Roll the fondant out and let it dry. She uses edible images on the fondant.

Look in my gallery at the Johnny Depp cake - that is a fondant plaque with an edible image on it.
