Here is a cake I made with gumpaste flowers.......first and only time I have made them.......getting ready to start messing around with it again .......I just purchased the wilton gumpaste flower kit, it came with a book.....showing great step by step instructions on making probably 15 different types of flowers a couple types of leaves and even tips on making arrangements and it also came with all the cutters and a couple tools for shaping.....and a practice board and rolling pin and the two types of sponges needed for rolling out.......the whole thing was under 20 dollars........then I just bought a can of the gumpaste mix that you mix with water for 5 dollars......and made a ton of flowers........the mix actually made more than what is in that cake!!!

I've been fortunate enough to live in an area where classes are readily available. For certain flowers I have had to wing it on my own and I used Nicholas Lodges dvd's and videos. He's a great teacher and the videos take you through the process step by step. I prefer videos to books because you can actually see the technique being done.

I love doing gumpaste flowers.. I find it very relaxing to work on them. I have pictures in my gallery if your interested.

Have fun!!

Check with your local Michael's they might have a gumpaste course. I am taking one there next month.

I took a Wilton gumpaste class using the kit Khalstead mentioned. It is a great, great basic course. What I am learning SINCE that class, is that there are some true artists out there who major in the art of gumpaste.....and other gumpaste recipes and ready-made gumpastes that offer some great versatility. I am fortunate to have an instructor available in my area who has studied under several of "the greats", and she then passes on her skills in her classes. I'm overwhelmed by what you can do with the stuff! Personally...I just wanted to make a great rose. Now lillies and orchids have my attention. Like any other medium.....there are conflicting ways of teaching the techniques and both ways can yield wonderful results. Best of luck to you!

A nice book is "Simplifying Sugar Flowers" by Alison Proctor if you still want a book... I like it because she uses the same cutters in several different ways (so you don't need separate cutters for every flower!)

Lots of different flowers in there!

KHalstead I hope you don't mind but I am borrowing the idea for your flower pot cake. I think I might end up using all my gum paste though!!!
