I have a question..I am going to make a cross cake for my son's Christening the last weekend in March. The cake will be fondant covered, with a fondant bow and a ton of fondant flowers along the border..(from the wilton 2000 yearbook) If I am going to mix the fondant with gumpaste, for the bow and flowers, can I make them now? No one will be eating them anyway..Thanks in advance.. While I am asking questions, I am going to put the cross cake on a sheet cake, I am thinking of making the sheetcake baby blue ( fondant) so the cross cake will stand out. Or do you think it should be all white??? I am going to put a fondant rope border on the sheetcake. Thanks everyone, I love this website!!!!!

Maybe do all white and then use the blue for the borders? I don't know, I am sure it will be great either way
You can make them now and give the bows time to dry and hold shape. i think the white on blue would be lovely. Make sure to post pictures!
Thanks you guys are fast!!! Do I keep them in a tupperware container with the lid on?? First I let them get hard right , then I cover them..Did that make sense??
I just discovered that Silpat mat works great for rolling and cutting fondant. Have you tried this? It works so well. I didn't need any cornstarch, it didn't stick and it stayed up. I've been working on parch paper up until now. The difference was incredible. I'm busy trying to share my idea with everyone.!!

jlh: What is a Silpat mat and where do I get one? It sounds like it worked great for you and I'd love to get one before I attempt MMF.

I don't have the sililpat mat but I do have the roulepat. Same thing I except larger, AND both sides are covered witht he silicone so it sticks to your table surface better when you are rolling out the fondant. I have been doing cakes for several years and use lots of fondant (mostly marshmallow). I could not survive without it. Best cake related purchase I ever made! They have them at linens n things or bed bath and beyond and they always have those 20% off coupons in the mail every week or so. I would definitely go with the roulepat because the silipat I think is a little small for rolling out slightly larger cakes.
Here's my cross cake attempt. I made my bow about 3 days in advance and still had to keep tissue paper in the loops. Held well though didn't need to add anything to the fondant. Can't wait to see it finished.
Add a bit of Gum tex to your fondant the next time. It will dry a lot quicker than 3 days and you wont need to leave The tissue in that long.
When I made my bow for the wedding cake that I had to do, I just used the gumpaste by itself and it was completely dry in two days.
I have been practicing making bows fom MMF and I added Fixodent and it came out great, dried in two days also.
Your choice of the sheet cake being blue and the cross white sounds beautiful...can't wait to see pictures.
I store mine in a cardboard box with a id on it. It is important to store it somewhere warm and dry. Moisture will cause the loops to drop
