The cream cheese must be at room temperature to be able to mix it propely (same as if you wee making a cheesecake). I have used cream cheese icing a couple of times, but only used it for making simple borders (shells). I would think if you thicken it a bit more with powdered sugar you may be able to make flowers with it, but have not tried it.

When I make my cheesecakes I usually leave it out (removed from the box)a minimum 2 hours for best results. Yes it can be microwaved but be careful not to melt it too much
Place 1 completely unwrapped package of cream cheese in a microwavable bowl or on a microwavable plate.
Microwave on HIGH for 15 seconds. (depending on your microwave, you may need less time, start lower time and try)
Add 15 seconds for each additional package of cheese.

Using a plate makes it easier to scrape the cheese off.
You might wish to turn the cheese over halfway through microwaving.

not sure when you've posted, but i will microwave it just for seconds at a time, or if i'm baking, set it on top of the stove to warm up. i've done basketweave with my cream cheese. i think the kind i used was called decorators cream cheese, and it had a little more powd sugar than just reg cream cheese icing. worked beautifully for me. my picture of the basket with fall colored leaves is cream cheese to give you an idea,
