i am making an astros grooms cake, a 14"cake with an astros star on top..
so i have tried to cut a star out , ice it, and cover it in fondant.. (well that didnt work..when i cut the star it looked great, then when i tried to ice it, the tips of the star wouldnt stay together for my life, and the fondant makes the star look chunky, and i want it to look pointed! so i gave up on that.
so i tried a FBCT! and that looks great, but i was just wondering if there was anyone who has made a star cake, and how you did the tips,
or if it was possible to cover a star in BC icing, without ruining the shape?

In the Whimsical bake house book she shows you how to make stars out of melted chocolate. You outline it with the melted chocolate and then fill it in with the same chocolate. No different consistencies. You can use the candy melts for this. The candy melts come in different colors but if you want to create your own color you can color the white chocolate candy melts with candy food coloring. You can also apply luster dust once it's set and cold.

Anyways, good luck. Is your cake dense enough? Did you try it with pound cake?
What about cutting out the different sections of the star with fondant, and then putting them on like tiles. I think that's how that one lady did it on that Food Network cake competition.

I have made star shaped cakes covered in fondant, they are in my photos, I used a star shaped pan and I covered them with a thin layer of BC then I covered them in MMF. It worked out pretty good. My only suggestion would be if you don't have a star shaped pan try carving one but don't make the edges so sharp so they are not that pointy and fragile, make the tips kind of rounded so they are thicker and easier to work with. well i carved my first one thicker because i knew the corners wouldnt hold up..but it didnt look right.. and im trying to get it to look specifically like the astros star, so if the corners are more rounded than pointed, its not going to look good. anyway, i think im just going to stick with the buttercream traansfer, it looks pretty good. i think im going to post pictures in the next few days of both to get some more opinions. thanks yall.
