Interfacing is a durable material used in sewing or crafts that adds support to layers of fabric.

Read an in depth article here:
http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?page=section/sewtips/interface.htm

You can use interfacing, or paper towels to smooth your icing, as outlined in this article by sewsweet2
I use Viva brand paper towels as opposed to interfacing. Its really a personal preference.

Actually, the reason I use Viva Brand is because it is the only brand I could find that does not have any quilting or designs so it does not leave any marks.

Viva Paper towels are a product of Kleenex

I would not put unwashed interfacing against anything I intended to be eaten. Many fabrics are sold with a sizing in them. I don't know if it is harmful to eat but I know what a warehouse full of fabric bolts smells like in summer heat. I don't want that next to my food! Smooth paper towels are my choice.
