Okay, this is going to sound really silly, but how do you decorate your cake without getting icing on your cakeboard?

Do you ice the cake on a different surface and then somehow move it onto the cakeboard when you're done? If so, how do you do that?

I've tried putting pieces of wax paper under the edges of the cake over the cakeboard so as to not get icing on the board, but then when I try to pull the pieces out when I'm done, the cake cracks. Does that just mean I'm putting the pieces too far under the cake? Or should I be using parchment instead?

I realize the answer is probably really simple, icon_redface.gif but I can't seem to come up with it. I've never taken any cake classes and haven't read any cake books.

Thanks!

I use wax paper, 5" X 4" strips (4 or five of them) and slip them about an inch under the cake all the way around the side. Maybe you are sticking them too far under?? Mine have never cracked as I pulled them out.

I do the wax paper too.........but another suggestion might be to put your cake directly onto a cardboard round that is the exact size of your cake, ice it, and then shove a spatuala under it to move it to your final cake board.....I used to do this back when I was a lot messier than I am now.......(I'm still pretty messy when decorating though LOL).....I would just put a dollop of icing on the final cake board so that the cardboard round wouldn't slip around

hey britton I moved to Jersey from Ohio and am moving back soon as I sell my house..........never thought I would saying I'm moving BACK to Ohio LOL waaaaaaaayyy different than Jersey that's for sure. icon_lol.gif

I just wipe my board carefully with a wet paper towel once I am done.

I scrape off carefully what I can with a knife then use a wet paper towel to finish it.

I also use the wet paper towel, wiping my board off when I'm done. I wrap my boards in freezer paper and it seems to clean off really well.
