Dumb Question.....salted/unsalted Butter???
Decorating By 29apr00 Updated 22 Mar 2007 , 3:09pm by 29apr00
What the heck is salted or unsalted butter??? I'm going to make the buttercream dream recipe but have no idea what kind of butter to get! I thought there was only 1 kind of butter! Probably not Country Crock Churn Style, right??
Thanks!
Most of the time cooks/chefs will use unsalted butter so they can control the amount of salt/seasoning in the recipe. I normally use Land O' Lakes salted butter in my buttercream recipe but my recipe doesn't call for extra salt like some do. I have made it both ways and I like the flavor better with the salted butter. You definitely want to use a good quality stick butter.
Enjoy!
I use the buttercream dream recipe and I like it better with salted butter.
But you can try them both to see what you like.
Regular butter is salted (I believe it's 1/4 t of salt per stick). Otherwise, the box will say "unsalted butter."
Unsalted butter has a higher melting point than salted. And Crisco's is even higher. Then there's the king of high melting points: Alpine or Sweetex shortening (Alpine has the highest melting point). These are great for hot, humid summers.
I use salted butter, it tastes very good in my BC, and the salt is supposed to cut down on some of the sweet! I buy mine at either Costco, or Walmart!
Isn't Country Crock (churn style or not) a vegetable spread or margarine?
i use margarine for my vegan buttercreams all the time. tastes great!
But the buttercream dream recipe calls for 1 stick salted AND 1 stick unsalted?? So do i need to use both, or just one or the other?
If the recipe calls for both use both. And if your house is like mine butter won't go to waste. You can cook with or freeze the leftover sticks of butter.
I make the buttercream dream recipe all the time. If I want it to be less sweet I use all salted butter. I also use Land O' Lakes.
