Alright, so I run a small home base baking buisness, where I sell decorated cakes as well as cookies, breads, muffins, cheescakes etc.. I just got my buisness license back in October, so I haven't really had a ton of orders yet, one or two a week, small orders.

Well, I got a call yesterday from a new coffee shop in town asking if I could make a few things that they could have in their display case, said she would display my buisness card as well. She ordered 2 dozen cookies,a pie and a chocolate cake. I can decorate however I want, use whatever filling I want etc.. So I need some great ideas!

She is just trying out my stuff to see if she wants to order from me in the future for her coffee shop, this would be such great steady buisness for me and would get my stuff eaten and seen by so many I wnat it to be really good. I think I want to fill the chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and have chocolate buttercream icing, I just don't really know how to decorate it for this purpose.

Any great ideas?

All the best!!!
How about some real coffee beans on that chocolate cake and ganache....oooo sounds good!!
Maybe make the chocolate roll out cookies from kitchengifts.com (those are fantastic) with antonia 74's royal and maybe make cookies in the shape of coffee cups!!

And if I was in a coffee shop and wanted pie...coconut cream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok....I'll stop now...I'm going grocery shopping soon and if I start thinking too much about this stuff who knows what I'll buy!!!

Congratulations - the cake sounds good. If she is selling buy the slice or the whole cake. If buy the slice, I would do some big rossettes on top (give her a place to the cake) and on top of the rossette you can put white chocolate shavings. If it a whole cake she is selling then a simpl border with chocolate roses would be fine.

For the cookies I would do the no fail sugar cookies some shaped as a coffee mug or tea cup. Flower shape would be nice and some with circle or square cookies with sanding sugar on them for those who do not like icing on their cookies. I have people love the sugar cookies with on the sugar on top so I make some of those. Is she orders more, then shamrocks would be cute. Spring cookies would be nice until summer comes then you can change the designs for the seasons.

What a great oppurtunity!! I was thinking about something coffee themed too but then I thought maybe people would want something a little different. I for one love vanilla cake and coffee. But that's just me. also it may be a good idea to impress her with something based on the coffee shops logo...I also like the idea of some simple rosettes and chocolate curls on a cake. Whatever you do will be great I'm sure!! Good luck!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I already decides to do some traditional cookies. Peanut butter, with dark chocolate drizzled on them and white chocoalte macadamia nut, since these are my best tasting cookies, they are to die for.

She requested pumpkin pie, which isn't really in season, but thats okay, it's what she asked for. I actually froze a bunch of fresh pumpkin back in November, so I have that on hand, and I make a great pumpkin pie.

She also requested chocoalte cake, so I have to stick with that much. I love the idea of the rosettes and chocolate curls. I thought about maybe making some white and dark chocoalte triangles to stick in each rosette, but chocolate covered esspresso beans would be pretty cool too.

Okay, heres what I came up with. It's nothing fancy really, but I thought it needed to be simple, I was more focused on making it taste amazing than having elaborate decor. It is a 4 layer mocha cake, filled with chocoalte mousse and iced with mocha buttercream. The decor is buttercream, chocolate drizzles and dots and on top are esspresso beans.

Let me know what you guys think!

Yummy! that really looks good! Maybe add a few nuts and drizzle it with caramel too! Those type things really seem to leave the shelves at our local coffee shop. I personally don't care for nuts, but everyone else seems too.

Good luck on your endeavors, I'm sure you will get tons of orders from it!

Just wanted to leave a quick update for anyone following. The lady must have liked the order because she just placed another order for lemon bars, blondies, a cheesecake, banana bread and zucchini bread! No cake this time so not as much fun, but still business! My MIL went in undercover or me to check out the display. She cut the cake into pieces in the display case! So next time I will do something even more simple since it's not displayed whole anyways. But she did put my business cards out next to my cookies and my MIL bought a piece of cake and said it was the best chocoalte cake she ever had!

That's great news! Who would've thought to use their MIL as a secret shopper! Too funny!
