My son is graduating on May 21st and leaves for boot camp in the Marines onthe 23rd. I really would like to make his graduation cake really special. What I have in mind is a sheet cake with a graduation cap cake on the left side with a bridge in the middle of the cake with a graduation doll standing on the right side of the bridge and a Marine Cap on the right side. Kinda of like he has crossed the bridge from high school to the Marines. My question is I have no idea how to go about making a Marine cap. If anyone has any suggestions I would be so grateful. I want it to be 3D. I have had this cake in my mind since he joined last year and really would like to be able to pull it off. Thanks in advance because I know you guys and gals will come up with great suggestions.

i found a picture of a marine hat...maybe use card board to get the shape and cover it in fondant or gumpaste colored to match the photo. or if you can, sculpt one out of cake...HTH don't forget to post when you're finished.

Here are a few pic of Marine Corp hats/caps, whatever they actually call them and a pic of the Marine Corp emblem.

I hope this helps!

My sons are 15 & 16 and all they talk about is joining the military after graduating. It would be an honor to have my children defend our great nation, but the thought actually scares the tapedshut.giftapedshut.gif out of me.

I wish him well in his quest and my prayers will be with you for his safety.

Good luck with the cake. I can't wait to see it!

Oops! Forgot to add the photos! icon_redface.gif

Be careful of the insignia...make sure that the correct one is used, you don't want to use a Navy or Coast Guard insignia on a Marine's cap...each service is a little picky about that kind of thing. Good Luck!

That is SO true.
It sounds like he's enlisting and there are differences in officer hats and enlisted hats sometimes so make sure you research that, it's yet another thing they are picky about.

Here is what I did for my husband's dress cover cake (Have yet to upload my pics) for his re-enlistement party.

8x2 round cake tort, fill, and iced. Cut a Very Slight angle on the top and then place a 9in round cardboard on top of it. I secured it with a small dowel. I then covered this section in white fondant.

Brim - black fondant, Cut a circle using my 8in round as a template. Cut in half.Use the pan again to cut a slight crescent on the inside so the brim molds to the cake. I dried it draped around a mixing bowl so it had a lift when I placed it on the cake board.

You also want to cut a 1/2in strip of black to strip of black to go above the bill of the cover. It should only go halfway back. You will then need another 1/2 strip half this length to go directly in the middle in front of this piece & the edges should be cut to a point. I small 1/2in strip on each end of this strip to show that the cover has been "fitted" to the Marines head.

There are two buttons on the sides of the cover that attach the black strip to the cover. I just used fondant "buttons" painted gold as I could not get my mold to come out right. You will also need a solid gold Eagle, Globe, and Anchor if he is going enlisted (it is silver & gold for officers) to place in the front, middle of the cover aligned with the top. You can buy EGA candy molds at www.marinewives.com. They are 5.99 for a sheet of 6 & this is what I used for the EGA.

If you need any help, PM me & I will do my best.

Thank you so much BellaRosa for the instructions. That is pretty much what I had come up with as a plan. I really appreciate the help. I will post pics as soon as it is complete. Now the only thing I have to worry about is, I am having surgery on my shoulder on the 16th of March, so I am praying that everything is ok and I can use both arms to make this cake for the 2nd of April. Once again thank you so very much.

my first thought was to use a cupcake for the hats......both of them........I wasn't thinking on that large of a scale I guess.......cupcakes with the appropriately shaped cookies on top, covered in fondant!!
