Ok folks, I am new to this site and I have 2 questions...for now...
1) What is Satin Ice fondant? Is that the fondant that looks all sparkly and shiney? Where do I get it?
2) how do I get metalic looking frosting? Not the shimmer dust but actual frosting that looks silver or gold?
Thanks, you are all so helpful!!!!
Satin Ice is just a brand of fondant. It looks like regular fondant. You can get it from www.cakesbysam.com or possibly at a local bakery/cake supply store.
As far as silver or gold goes, it can be "painted" with silver or gold luster dust and vodka/lemon extract or you can use edible gold/silver leaf (tends to be a pricier solution).
I have purchased Satin Ice from www.cakesbysam.com and also http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/mini.aspx?T=1&SubCatId=1015.
I have only used fondant twice, but Satin Ice is pretty easy to work with. Although I'm interested in trying a couple other brands that people have recommended here on CC, Fondx and Mill Lane.
I can't help with the metalic looking frosting, but I'm sure someone else will be able to. There are so many talented and experienced decorators here!!!
the metalic look I would assume is from luster dust or something similiar. I am sure if you had an example we could tell you for sure.
Well I have tried luster dust and tried to mix it woth corn syrup and paint it on but is was very translucent. I have never tried anything else. I want to try to crate little silver/gold beads.
Where can I get gold or silver leaf? How does it work?
iceberg, you have to use the dusts with something with a high alcohol content. vodka or lemon extract - these will evaporate quickly. With corn syrup you won't get the same result. Only use a tiny bit when painting on.
the super gold and silver color is highlighter dust. You can also buy silver and gold balls (dragees)
Ok, I tried it with the vodka and it did work much better but I am still not getting the deep, rich, metalic gold color that I have seen is so many pictures. I think I have the wrong product, I have the Wilton's shimmer dust.
Oh Yea....thanks for the "cakesbysam" website...although, I am sure my husband isn't thankful...In a matter of 5 minutes I cut myself off at a $100 order!
Shimmer dust is different than luster dust. To get the bold gold you are trying to achieve you need a luster dust mixed with alchol or lemon extract. I have found the grain alcohol (at local state store) works best because it does not streak like the vodka can.
