I tried to do a 3D tiger today... i have never felt so untalented . I know i'm not the best cake decorator on here, by any means...but I think my 7 y/o could have done a better job. This was supposed to be for my neighbor's son's bday...i don't want to give it to them ...even though it's free...thinking about eating the evidence. ...please...tell me what i did wrong...be gentle LOL. i know it's ugly, but what could i have done to make this cake stand up?
oops, I ws typing during your 2nd post!
Okay, which pan did you use? It looks like the lamb pan?
yes...the older 3d lamb...i tried to trim the ears to look like cat ears...that was ok..not the best, but i would do. i was asked about this cake last night...i knew i should have said no.
wait...my mistake, it was a 3d bunny. see this thing has got me so upset, i can't even think straight
To get it to stand up - have you tried putting a dowel through the cake into the bottom cake board.
maybe that's where i messed up..i didn't use a cake board, just sat in on the cake plate. i've never done a 3d cake before, i did try to run a dowl diagonally to keep it from becoming decapitated, but it didn't work.
Okay, deep breath.....and I believe it's salvagable!
I think you can try 1 of 2 options:
Scrape the existing icing off the cake and re-ice it using the star tip making the black stripes with black icing, white on the face and paws, etc.
The 2nd option would be to do the whole thing in orange icing, smooth it like you did and paint on the stripes with diluted colouring.
To make it stand up use skewers through the haunches, shoulders and head and drive them into the board.
Edit to add: since you are using a plate ice the bottom of the cake and place that on the plate, it should act like 'glue'.
I would suggest to put it on a cake board. Put icing on the board first, and then put the cake on top of that(kinda like a glue). Then use a dowel and put one straight down through the head. If you're still unsure about it, put one straight down through the body also. If you don't have any boards, just get a box and make some boards that way. Cut two or three layers and wrap it in cake foil or whatever you use to cover the board. Cut the dowel to a length where it will go through the boards also. Sharpen one end of the dowel and push it through, (I just use a paring knife to sharpen it). When you get to the board, gently tap it in. I actually use a small meat tenderizer for a hammer, (but that's only for my cakes). This way, the dowel is anchored into the board. Then just touch up, with icing, where you put the dowel in.
I hope this helps. Good Luck with it!!!!!
thanks for the tips guys...i knew you all would be able to help. i'm going to attempt to fix this...i'll post again later
on second thought...maybe i should suggest to the Admin. about having an ugliest cake contest...i know i'd win that one hands down...LOL
tried to do a quick fix, it dosen't look too bad, but i'm still not entirely happy with how it turned out...thanks for all the tips and suggestions
cake is in my gallery
Glad ya got it straightened out a bit..I think we have all that that "day" or cake....
It doesn't even look like the same cake! Well, don't stress too hard over it! Kids love cake, no matter what it looks like! We've all had a bad cake days!!
I think it is really cute, though I don't know what a Clemson tiger is. I was going to say not so much white, but I think that is part of the Clemson tiger look.
It looks much better, and like the earlier post kids just like cake if it looks close to what they asked for they are happy. You have done better than I. I have not tried a sculpted cake. I have done a few stand up ones, but I think your tiger is nice looking
OK here it goes. I am new to this cake decorating thing & I know how much work goes into making a cake. I LOVE THIS CAKE!! I think you should just leave it as is. I think it is SOOOooo cute. It brought tears to my eyes. Great job!!
