Good morning everyone:
I would love to know if it's appropriate to out silk flowers on cakes. I am not very experienced in working with gum paste or fondant and feel a little nervous in trying to make them. I am new at this and think is too soon for me. Is it okay to wash the silk flowers?

Any opinion is welcome.
Thanks

Hi Tina! Lots of people use silk flowers on their cakes. I haven't so I'm not sure what is the best way to wash them but I know there are threads about this in the forum. Try a search. I know some people put a bit of powdered sugar on the cake then wax paper and lay the flowers on top of that.

Hope that helps a little!

Thanks very much I think the idea of using of using wax paper and powder sugar sounds good enough for me.

You can also use real flowers too.

I think it's easier to get some real flowers than try to hunt down silk flowers that look nice. The price of quality silk flowers is going to be similar to the cost of real ones, so you might as well use real.

yes, and I don't know about where you live.......but where I live they always have really inexpensive roses, carnations, daisies, etc. at the farmers' markets!

You just have to be careful about how and what flowers you put on the cake. You are supposed to use flowers that have not been sprayed with pesticides and then there are some flowers which must never touch the cake at all. There is a list on here somewhere about toxic flowers and lots of threads about how to safely use flowers on your cake.

I just posted a pic of my wedding cake. It was the first one I had ever done and I knew nothing about making flowers. The roses are silk and the carnations are real. Since the cake was covered in fondant, I just laid them on top of the cake. It was the Wilton fondant and everyone always peeled it off, so I didn't worry about. It can definitely be done and you can find nice looking silk flowers. If you're short on time, it could be the way to go.

Hi guys:
Thanks a million for all the suggestions about using either silk flowers or real flowers. I will certainly try both suggestions.

Thanks again.
Tina
