My daughter is finishing soccer season in about 6 weeks and i want to do a whimsy cake for the end of season party...i've never tried making fondant figures before...so i'm sure i'll be on here with LOTS more questions icon_biggrin.gif ... here goes my first round of questions...how long can you make them in advance? how do they need to be stored? do i need to add any special flavoring? if so can i use the candy flavor or does it have to be something like vanilla or almond? sorry for so many questions, but i'm ready to take myself to the next level... icon_lol.gif and thank God i have you guys to help out... thumbs_up.gif

I'm wondering a bit about any information you guys can share. I molded my first fondant figures just this weekend. They were heads, hands and feet for a bowing ballarina I want to make in May. I thought I should practice a bit before doing the real cake. icon_razz.gif

So I have these 'head lollipops' sitting on my kitchen shelf. Should I move them to a different place to dry? And how long will it be before I can attempt to mold the body on to the heads?

Should I attempt to fix the arms on to the shoulders with toothpicks at the same time as I make the body or should that be on a different day. I hate to use royal icing to glue the pieces but if there is no way around it, I'll bit the bullet. icon_rolleyes.gif

so....any suggestions?
hope I didn't high jack the thread, I thought since we were talking fondant we could do it in one event.

thanks in advance,
momma chris

no...you didn't hijack...LOL. you brought up some good questions that i didn't ask about. I didn't think about attaching the heads to the bodies icon_surprised.gif ... wouldn't even know where to begin....

I have done alot of fondant molding. I just attach my heads to the bodies with water. If they are very big I will sometimes use a tooth pick or small wire, just be sure to warn the eaters...

You can flavoe it with any flavor, if you are going to use Wilton's store brand, you should try and flavor it, that stuff is not so yummy!!! But the mmf, or the candy clay is very tasty.

I make my fondant figures up to a week in advance. Just note that they will get hard. I just mold them on my cake pans and let them air dry.

Hope that helps a bit.

I have just started to get into cake decorating. I used to be an art teacher, so I find I am better with my hands molding things. flowers, and people rather than piping them. So most of my work has been with fondant

yes and also......be sure to keep them away from sunlight while they are drying......it will fade and something change the color of it altogether......I've made them up to 2 weeks in advance and once they were firm enough, just put them in a tupperware container to keep fresher......but they don't "spoil"
