I have never covered a cake in fondant. Is it really that hard? I am thingking about entering a contest and fondant seems to be the rage. Is fondant the way to go these days? Do people prefer icing their cakes? How about when it comes to eating the cake.....any feedaback about eating a fondant covered cake?

When I look at the cakes that the big time decorators make...they seem to all use fondant?

I don't find it all that hard...per sey..just something that requires practice like anything else, as far as the trend..yes it leans heavily in the direction of fondant cakes. I would experiment a little with it ..you will probably like it.

I agree working with fondant isn't hard and each time you do it you learn new tricks and the cakes look better. From the feedback I get people buy the cakes for the way that they look and not necessarily because they like the taste of the icing. Quite frankly the Wilton stuff tastes horrible, the MMF tastes much better. Give it a try - you won't regret it - good luck and keep us posted.

i find smoothing mm fondant a lot easier than smoothing buttercream! i guess i have always done pie crust and that is what fondant is like

buttercream smooth - just never happens for me

What is mmf? I love working with fondant and have always used wilton, seems to be just as expensive to make from scratch so I just buy it predone. IT TASTES AWEFUL! I think it look s beautiful so I use it with heavy buttercream underneath...any tricks of the trade that might help with getting all that powdered sugar off the final cake?

If you're doing a cake contest and no one is eating it, I would ice the cake or cake dummy in piping gel, and cover it in fondant (Wilton would work fine, but tastes nasty). If you're eating it, I would recommend getting Satin Ice fondant (cake store or on line). It tastes much better, and has a nicer consistancy. If people don't like it, they can peel it off the cake (ice in buttercream underneath).

For me, personally, fondant is way easier than regular icing. You can do so many things with it, too. Try making the MMF recipe posted here. It's really easy and tastes way better than Wilton's.

Marshmallow Fondant. The recipe is on the front page of the site. It's pretty cheap to make, so it doesn't hurt to at least try it out one time.

MMF is the way to go. It's like $2.00-2.50 to make and it tastes good! It's not hard to make, either! Forget the Wilton #$&*%! It is YUCKY!

I would tackle one thing at a time... I wouldn't try working with fondant and making it on the same day... I would buy some Wilton fondant and try covering a cake with it first... It is nasty tasting, but I find it nice to work with. I use it when I'm making a display cake... After playing with and gettting an idea of what the consistency should look and feel like then I would attempt making it.

Satin Ice is a good commercial brand.. That's all I use. I tried MMF and didn't like it and Wilton's is nasty tasting!!

Just jump right in and give it a try...Don't get discouraged if your cake doesn't turn out like you want...It takes practice!! Have fun!!
