In theory I know how to make an ice cream cake, but still have a few questions. I have read the article here on CC, but would like a couple of answers.

1. What is the best type of cake to use with an ice cream cake or will any cake work?

2. Is there a better frosting to use?

I would appreciate any tips you might have for me.

Thanks!!

I make them with just my regular cake. For the "frosting" I use very soft vanilla ice cream. Then the borders and any other decorations I use just the regular butter cream. I usually have to stick it in the freezer 2 or three times at least to make sure the whole thing doesn't turn into a puddle.

I use a firmer textured cake for mine and I use chocolate ganache for the frosting. Although if you do use ganache you have to work very quickly. A good tip would be to make sure tha cake is basicly frozen solide before you top it off with any frosting a all cause it will just slide right off your cake.

When you say reg. BC, do you mean all crisco, all butter, or 1/2 and 1/2 butter/crisco? Thanks.

I've seen an ice cream cake made with layers of cake and then layers of ice cream sandwiches... totaling 4 layers, 2 of each. It sounds less messy.. that is an easy idea!
