I copied this recipe from a post on this site and I think it is very good:

3/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/4 cups cocoa powder (I use Dutch Process or
regular Hershey's, depending on how dark I want the icing)
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
2 lbs powdered sugar
approx 1/2 cup of water

Mix the crisco and butter at low speed until creamy. Add the cocoa. Mix again, until the cocoa is incorporated. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla and most of the water. Beat at medium speed for a couple of months, till everything is incorporated in. Test for spreadability and add more water if needed.

Sorry I can't remember whose recipe this is, but I think it is very good.

LOL! Paula Deen and butter!!

Would you mind sharing your buttercream recipe? I'm all about the real thing....not a huge fan of Crisco.

Jackie,

Can you do borders and flowers with it? Does it crusts well?

Thanks,

It crusts really good and I made nice shells with it . Just a note this is an all butter buttercream the warmer the weather gets its not going to hold up as good ,if its just a cake made for the family at home you wont have any trouble but if its a wedding cake or a specially made cake you might have to go to half butter half crisco. Just my thoughts on the matter but you can be your on judge on that matter. icon_smile.gif

Thank you Jackie!! I am not too fond of Crisco either. I do use it when its a free cake and then I use 1/2 butter, 1/2 crisco just b/c its cheaper to make. I usually add cream cheese so that it is more stable and I know with that I can do the borders and stuff. Good to know that butter alone is good for what I want.

Thank you! Will definately try it.
