I have never made a purse cake but I have Colette Peters' book where she used a 6 inch square pan. and the cut it at an angle from the top left to the right. Her directions say to cut off the top of the cake on an angle, starting at the top of the cake and cutting dow 1 inch. Does this make sense? HTH

I made a stand up Purse cake last weekend for my daughters BF Birthday still haven't uploaded the picture yet but I will.

I made a 10" Round Cake, I cut a small piece from one side and a larger piece from the other side (like two semi circles), then stood it up, the larger flat size was the bottom and the smaller flat side the top of the bag.

I iced it with fondant. I put a strip of blue over the centre and then stuck yellow over the curved sides to meet the blue. I then rolled out very thin sausages of green fondant and flattened them over the joins of the blue and yellow. I cut out a semi circular yellow shape and draped it over the top as the flap on the bag. A cut out flower in dark pink was the catch on the front of the flap with a yellow centre in it. I rolled out another sausage of green, this time a thick one and draped it over the front as the handle. I decorated the top flap with small hearts and wrote "Happy Birthday" and the girls name on it I also made lipstick, eyeshadow and foundation and placed them on the board beside it.

I then discovered I had nowhere to put the birthday candles, lol. So I made up 11 fondant Rosebuds, put them around the board and inserted a candle into each one.

Hope thats of some help.
