Here are some pictures of the cake I did this weekend. My roses are almost perfect, and the rose buds, leaves and shells are almost as good as I want. Still have to work on doing a good general icing/smoothing job on a cake (thankfully can't really see the imperfections in these pics). All in all I was pleased with the outcome. Once I truly get the hang of the right stiffness/thinness of the icing consistency, this will be alot easier!
Any thoughts/suggestions on my results will be truly appreciated by this beginner.

You did a wonderful job on your cake. Did you make the roses with chocolate buttercream?
I think getting icing consistancy just right is one of my biggest challenges. I'm gettting better as I make more and more cakes. I finally figured out that you need to get your icing fairly thin in order to get a nice smooth finish, and I now use the paper towel all the time to smooth. It works great!!

Everything was in buttercream, the flowers just did not have as much cocoa in them. I am with you, with time and practice the icing will get easier to do.
