I am bored with just the normal shells for borders. I was thinking of doing a cake with the same tip but zig zagging it up and down the sides of the cake but then I wasn't sure what to do at the top or bottom of it to make it look good. Anyone got any good ideas or any other different ways to do borders or sides of cakes?
Do what I just did on the one I posted. I think it's called a reverse shell but I may be wrong. I'm not feeling well so I'm not thinking straight.

I'm border-challenged too. This decorator has a real talent with borders and embelishments. I like her "standard" border of three swirls and a swoop. There's lots to learn from her examples:

You basicly make "C's" on their sides, them go back over themin an opposite direction to make a braid pattern. Very easy and quick. Looks nice too.
hey crimsicle, i just looked at that site and they are nice... good ideas.
need some advise here... i am thinking i am just gonna do what i said in the beginning on the sides of the cake... use the shell tip but do zig zags all the way around going up and down... what to you think i should do for the border to match that on the top and bottom of the cake? or should i just leave it alone?
Are you talking about doing the zigzag from the top to the bottom, covering the whole sides? If so then I don't think you really need to add any other kind or border to it. If you do it might take away from the zigzag or look to busy.
If you have any of the Wilton yearbooks, they have some good, different border ideas in them. Look through the cakes, as well as in the center section.
To change up the look of your shell you can do it using other tips. If you do a round tip it will give you a bead border. I've also heard you can do it using a leaf tip.
i did it already, its in my photos.. the scooby one... i did just the zig zag... once i did it i realized that anything else around it would make it too busy. thanx for the pointers.
