Hi All!

I'm pretty new to cake decorating, and I'm looking for resources either in the Windsor area or even over in Michigan (since I go shopping over there all the time). I've been to Michael's and Joann, but I guess I'm looking for something more.

Thanks!
Amanda

HI prettyIn Pink22

Have you been to Cakes etc? on Grand Maris? They are great. I am also in the process of finding somewhere to buy in bulk in Detroit.

What are you looking for? Where are you?

Hi Nicole

You're cakes are great icon_smile.gif

I'm actually planning on going to Cakes Etc. this weekend! The only specific thing I'm looking for at the moment is a ready to use fondant other than Wilton, because I've heard how horrible it tastes. Please let me know if you find any good suppliers in Michigan, because I go shopping there pretty regularly.

I live in Leamington...I'm really just getting into cake decorating, and I think it's something I really enjoy. I guess I'm just kind of overwhelmed by the whole thing. I've thought about taking an intensive course in Toronto, so that I could possibly do this as a business. I guess I'm just worried about how much business there is in this area, and whether or not I could be successful doing this.

Thanks for any advice you can offer!
Amanda

I'm from Belle River and have actually bought the Virgin Ice fondant from the Bulk Barn. It is much better than Wilton's.

I, too, live in Michigan--the tip of the little finger. I'll just assume up front that my only resources are in Grand Rapids or the general vicinity of Detroit, but I'm near there once or twice a year. All over the state, really, and my husband has been travelling Indiana quite a bit lately. Any suppliers I should no about? Ooh--especially discount, outlet or factory stores!

In the Metro Detroit Area there's "Heinrich's Decorating Nook" at 10 mile and Van Dyke in Warren, "Miles" at 16 and Gratiot, "Sarah's" at Square Lake (19 mile) and John R, and "Baker's Delight" at 14 1/2 and Dequindre. There are a few other places but they only sell to those with business licenses.

I have been to Sarah"s and I am going to Heinrichs this week heard it is even better than Sarah's. The bulk barn Virgin Ice is very tasty.
And the price isn't bad. Cakes Etc. I buy from when I have to. I also order things from Golda's Kitchen in Mississauga. If you go on line she has a lot to offer and the delivery is pretty reasonable. Just type in Golda's Kitchen to get to her site.

Hope that helps out. I live in Windsor Hi Nicoles' a Tryin.

Heinrich's is the best stocked, most reasonably priced and has the most helpful staff. Sarah's is outrageously priced and Baker's Delight is limited in their stock. I've never been to Miles.

Nicole

We must have taken the courses very close to one another. I took them in March/April last year also at Michael's.

I've ordered from Golda's Kitchen and find them to be reasonably priced. One of these days I may get over to Detroit to see what out's there also.

The Flour Garden on Telegraph in Monroe, MI is a great place! Definitely worth the drive from Windsor. It has a lot of cake decorating supplies plus candy, chocolate, cookie and TONS of misc. baking supplies also.

Here's a link to where we've all been chatting away about it: http://forum.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=1832641#1832641

A round robin is where like six people sit at a table and someone demonstrates something for 20 minutes, then everyone gets up to play musical chairs and we work our way around the room hitting all the demos. It sounds like great fun!

You should sign up to go, go to www.michiganices.com and take a look around.

I am also from Metro-Detroit (Chesterfield) area and have been to Miles Cake & Candy Supply-many many years ago. About all I know is that it's very small-about the size of a small Baskin' Robins Ice Cream shop. If I am out that way, I'll pop in and find out what I can. If anyone is looking for specific items, let me know & I'll check it out.

Their web site is: http://www.milescakesupply.com/home/

Oh that sounds like fun bobwonderbuns!!! Def goin to look into it.
I think I am goin back to work next week...Poop. starting to enjoy being laid off. Ohwell.

Anyway, I just got home from the states....I ran into the one on 14.5 mile and Dequidre....Fabulous!!! thank you for recommending it. We were in that area...And that was the one I could remember. HEHE.

Amazing how expensive things are here....CRAZY.

Also, Hint....I went to Costco there too....The icing sugar was on for $1.97 for 2/4 pound bags..If you guys have Costco cards...run it. That is an amazing sale...It is cause they are disconituing that brand I guess they said.

Thank you all...Love this post!!

My Bulk Barn doesn't have Virgin Ice Fondant...at least not that I can find. Is it in the cake decorating aisle at your Bulk Barn??

Hi Nicole, and hi to everyone else from the Windsor/Detroit area! I had such a crazy weekend that I had almost no time to even look at my computer lol.

Anyway, I don't think that weekend in April is good for me, but if something changes I'll let you know.

Hi PrettyInPink22
Bulk Barn and Virgin Ice.
If you ask at the register they will get it for you they don't keep it out front it is in the back storage room.

The one on Walker Road has it.

Hope this helps you get it as it is a very tasty Fondant.

Kathy

All you guys coming from Canada, it would be much appreciated if you would drop me off a Tim Horton's coffee on the way through Ann Arbor icon_smile.gif.

And if anyone knows any cool places here I would be appreciative. WalMart has alot of wedding stuff cheap, but I don't like our Michael's or JoAnns for any stuff, all they carry is Wilton. And I can't make homemade fondant anymore, so I need a good alternative. Satin Ice sounds like what I want icon_smile.gif Thanks for all the info everyone.

My mom bought me a revolving cake plate for $10 there just today, and the Wilton 6 pack of 13x9 cake boards was $3.99!!!!!! I couldn't believe how cheap that stuff is there.

We actually have a Tim's on the other side of town but it's a pain to get there since I don't have a car anymore icon_sad.gif
