I just wanted to share the near-fatal catastropy of this mardi gras cake. My husband and I nearly killed each other over it!!

I asked him to do only 4 things on it: sculpt the baby, sculpt the jester, make the gold panels for the crown, and carve the kings cake portion. I did everything else. He knew this was coming up all week. When did he start? Well, he procrastinated until last night!!! The crown just ended up horrible. He cut the fondant out, and it was all uneven and bubbly looking...ugh!!! And then he got mad at me for not liking it. I did not have time to fix it, so I just went with it, and hoped that all the other details. I got mad because the more I saw it at the hall, the more I knew it could have been better.

It is for a charity event tonight, and we went to set it up. I'm not in love with it by any stretch, but I will say that I am happy with the bottom two layers. I just hope all the 600 doctors and lawyers attending this function won't notice!!

Anyway, I'll post the pics to my photos.

Thanks for looking!
Ellen

Coming from a Southerner: Oh Hush Girl!! Any Southerner would be proud to present that "King Cake" at their Mardi Gras soiree or ball!! I just got home from a parade and party myself (one of about 5 in the last 2 days!)...one right down the road from me on a street that runs along Mobile Bay. There was a king cake there that was so unworthy of the name! So know that if a Southern, once upon a time Mardi Gras 'queen' like me would have it that it must be GREAT! lol icon_lol.gif

It still blows my mind that Mardi Gras is creeping all over the nation when for so long it was thought of as something we crazy southerners did just for fun! lol icon_razz.gif

You and your hubby are very talented. Even with the rush, it's a stunning cake, really. I am not too familiar with the festival, do the molded baby and jester have any particular meaning? Also, I looked at some of your other photos, and the tree stump cake really wowed me! made me think of the talking tree in the Wizard of Oz. I have to think of a reason to make one!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

There are 'courts' in Mardi Gras, just like in British royalty, say. Kings, Queens, Pages, Jesters, etc. And the baby is generally hidden inside the baked King Cake and whoever finds it will have good luck for the coming year...I think that's how it goes. But after having just returned from a Mardi Gras party myself a few hours ago, my brain is a little fuzzy at the moment!

BJFranco & Dodibug are both from New Orleans...and MelissaBlack lived there too prior to Katrina. Maybe they can give more info?

thanks for the kind comments; I am sorry I did not get to post until this morning.
We ended up attending the mardi gras benefit, and low and behold, I found out that the kitchen would not cut the cake, so I had to do it myself!! I was totally unprepared.

ON top of that, there was a catering company that came in to do desserts for the event (as a donation). My cake was set up right next to them. I found out through talking to the owner that they also do cakes!!!! So as people were walking by, they thought the cake was THERIRS!!! So I made sure I told people that it was my company and handed out business cards.

I had a lot of positive feedback both about the design and the taste of the cake. I spoke to quite a few people, and there were a few interested in wedding cakes and birthday/sculptured cakes.

I cut the cake right in front of the line of people as they walked by, so that was a good marketing strategy. I got to joke around with people (a few people wanted to eat the "baby" on the kings cake, and I had to remind them of how wrong that was at any level! LOL)

Anyway, your comments were positive, my husband and I are happily married again, and we are going to get some exposure from this, so it was a postive experience after all!
