The only advice I can give you is keep the consistency thin and practice first on something other than your cake. I've found that if you give the icing some space between the tip and the cake surface, it's easier to direct where you want it to go (i.e. let it hang a little bit). But most importantly, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!

Good luck!!

I use the wilton tool that lets you make an imprint of the letters so all you do is trace over it

they also have it in italic

if you're looking to do them in royal.....just find a font online that you like, download it, use your notepad, microsoft word, etc. to type up what you want, print it out...lay it on a flat surface ie. a board, piece of glass, etc. and then lay wax paper or parchment over top and then simply trace over the letters with royal icing, allow it to dry completely then peel it off the paper and lay it on the cake......works really well!!

i used my kopykake projecter. you basically print out the message in whatever font you choose friom your computer, then used the projector to project the message onto the cake. pretty simle, i know this has helped many decorators with bad writing icon_smile.gif

Writing has always been a problem for me. So much that I have always felt like I needed to use candy letters. Recently I have tried practicing on a piece of wax paper first and find myself getting better. So now I do not need to buy all those candy letters anymore! icon_smile.gif

One thing I have found that helps is a battery operated laser level light. It keeps an "invisible" line on the cake to follow.

I like the laser level tip. I'm sure I can get my DH to buy one because he needs one for around the house icon_wink.gif . He's a carpenter, though, so he probably won't get one. icon_rolleyes.gif

This is a hand out I give my Course 1 students to help them with their writing! icon_smile.gif

Helpful Hints - Writing

The best thing you can do to help your writing is PRACTICE by writing on cakes whenever you get a chance to.

Other helpful hints are:
1. Use Message Press Sets - Wilton offers several of theses.
2. Use the bottom of your cake pan to plan, space and practice your lettering.
3. Maintain a straight line by using spatula or toothpick markings.
4. Relax and move your whole arm, not just your wrist, to write effectively.
5. First write the message in the same color your cake is iced in then pipe over it with a second color. You can also pipe it first in clear piping gel.
6. Get different font ideas from your Word Processing program on your computer.

Print out your message using a font that you like. Using a corsage pin or toothpick, poke holes along the letters. Lay this over the cake and dust with powder sugar or cocoa powder. When you remove the paper you should have little dots that you can follow when writing your message.

Remember, spelling counts! Write the message or name on paper first to check it.
