Ok. this is for a 250 person wedding for a semi family members cousins. I said I would give them a good deal on the wedding cake and will be taking a couple of free samples this weekend to try. I am going to ask for $1.50 per serving? Is this a good deal or am I too high. I am going to do a Chocolate 14 and 10 stacked for the groom and a 16, 10, 8 stacked for the wedding cake in White and Strawberry. I would usually start at 2 to $2.50 per serving.

That sounds about right, and for 2 cakes that's probably too low. I wouldn't worry about the price being too high. If your worried about the price, call a bakery that does wedding cakes, and ask them their pricing (like you're interested in getting one..shhhh) on a cake that would feed 250 people plus. That's what I would do..sorry, hope that helps.

Well I told the family that I would give a discounted rate and I want to make sure that is not too high.

I agree that it's a good idea to check around to get a good idea of the pricing in your area (comparable cake size and decorations). Also, have a very good idea of what it will cost you (supplies, etc.) to make the cake. Then, I think you will have a truer idea of what you can discount regarding your time and skill. It's your family so I understand that you do want to do right by them, at the same time, I'm sure you don't want to lose money on this.

Please make sure you are charging enough to cover your supplies and atleast some of your time. I understand wanting to give a discount, but don't cheat yourself!!

One thing I like to keep in mind when doing cakes for family or friends, is that they are going to expect more for their money. They usually don't think twice about asking you to add all the extras (she won't mind, we're family.......) and they really don't realize what goes into making a cake. And of course you want it gorgeous, because hopefully you'll get referrals from it. Don't give too much of a discount, or you will lose money. Figure yourself a cushion. Also, you know you are going to be more generous with the "pay me"s than you would be with another customer (that's okay, I understand, you can pay me later......).

Your price sounds great for family. They'll still save some serious dollars.
