I want to get down and dirty in this business but have no idea how to get an apprenticeship in my area. This doesn't have to be a traditional apprenticeship but someone with experience who will take me in so I can develop my skills. The tradeoff of course is that these people get a free set of hands to help them with their work. I have no idea where to start looking. Ideas, suggestions, thoughts?

I would go to a wedding website and look for the top cake decorators in your area, and send out your resume. You could also go to bridal shows and meet a lot of people that way too.

These will have links to local cake decorators in your area:

www.theknot.com
www.weddingchannel.com
www.modernbride.com

Also get out your phone book and start looking at local bakeries. Go in dressed nicely with your resume in hand. I'd also create a portfolio, and have Kinkos make it look really professional. Have it printed on good paper, bound, etc.
