There is a recipe on the site for one using a yellow cake mix that is excellent. I use it all the time and always have rave reviews on it.

thanks for the advice. i think i'll just take the extra time to make a scratch cake. i'm in the deep south & i've never tasted a red velvet cake from a mix icon_wink.gif

I have used the box red velvet several times before and it's ok - turned out really moist. I just like the "from scratch" red velvet better.

aww heck as long as you have your buttermilk and red food coloring and cocoa powder you should be ok doesn't take any longer to make one from scratch than it does from a mix anywho. LOL (lotsaluv)

Here's the recipe i always use for red velvet cake.

http://cake.allrecipes.com/az/RedVlvtCke.asp

BUT! There are some changes that you'll find all over the comments that make it good. DO NOT follow the ingredients amounts exactly or you'll get a bad cake. The changes made to the recipe are :

Doubled the cocoa
Increased sugar to 2 cups
use 1 cup of oil in place of shortening
Increased vanilla to 1 1/2 tsp.
Increased vinegar to 1 tbsp

If you use the changes made its the absolute best red velvet cake i've ever had. Please let me knwo hwo it goes for you if you use it! thumbs_up.gif
