I just feel like making a cake. Does anyone have any ideas for a cake? I don't want to make a standard roses and frosting. Something interesting, I am new to the cake making thing and I want to practice after all practice makes perfect and the men in my house love to eat cake so that is never a problem. My only problem is that I am out of cocoa powder and I don't know what kind to make! icon_smile.gif

Are you looking for recipes? Or ideas for decorating? I wanted to make a cake for no good reason earlier this week. I wanted to try out a new lemon cake recipe I had. I had never done a frozen buttercream transfer, so I used that as my excuse. I did the logo of the local college team, knowing my daughter's boyfriend would eat it up (literally and figuratively). I would share the recipe, but I didn't like it...way too heavy. But, anyway...I didn't use a bit of cocoa. icon_smile.gif There are lots of terrific recipes on this site. The one I used wasn't one of them, unfortunately.

This is a yellow cake recipe I got from here, and I have made it a few times and its absolutely delicious. Simple ingredients, nice and moist without being heavy, smells like heaven while its baking. http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-2094-Yellow-Cake-Layers.html

As for how to decorate, has there been a technique you've been dying to try? Like a frozen buttercream transfer, or carving, stringwork, scrolls or swags? Here is a link to wilton's decorating techniques if you want some ideas: http://www.wilton.com/decorating/basic/index.cfm

You could try cutting the top layer on a slant for a whimsical cake, and do it up in a harlequin fashion. You could also look through the galleries to see if something inspires you. I just made cupcakes on sunday because I wanted to try that swirl effect on the top, the yellow cake makes great cupcakes too thumbs_up.gif

Ive been dying to try out the floral wonder technique. It looks so elegant on the sides of white iced cakes. I have a cake at home awaiting my icing to test it out icon_smile.gif If the 7month old will allow it I may try it this afternoon. I will be taking my final class of course 1 this Monday so I have alot of homework as well. Rose roses roseessss ahh!

Im also itching to learn more on the how to's of pattern transfers that seem to be so popular. Im not even sure where to purchase them LOL

Let us know what you end up doing! thumbs_up.gif
