I recently bought a lily nail to make some flowers. As I follow the instructions it says that I am supposed to use the leaf tip. However, everytime I have ever used the leaf tip it does not come to a point and is very aggravating. Is there another way to make them without using the leaf tips? Any suggestions very welcomed!!

Could your icing be a little too thick? If you can make a good leaf from that consistency, you should be able to make a point on the lily petal.

Hey Susan,

Try using tip 352, that gives the best leaves. Also, how thick is your icing?

Sometimes you have to use the tip of your two fingers with cornstarch or powdered sugar and smooth the leaf end together.

I tried using tip 352 to make the lily but it didn't look right at all. As for the leaf tips, I tried separating them a bit as suggested by wilton but still no point. Truthfully I don't want to pinch them together. Not so sure how that would look on the lily flower. I guess I'll just have to keep trying.
I thought that maybe by posting this that some people that have made them before might have a trick or two up their sleeve for me icon_smile.gif

Is your tip turned the right way? Your foil in the nail has to be smooth. Also, just alot of practice. Use medium to thick royal. They are my favorite flower and still if I am not careful, they mush together.

in my wilton class we were told to dip your fingers into some corn starch and make the point come together with your fingers...hope that makes sense.

We just did these last night and my instructor said you have to use your fingers to get the point on the lily...that tip won't do it...not sure if she's taking the easy way out, but that was her instruction. Hope that helps.

Try using tip 69 or 70. and open the prongs up some so they are almost straight. Then add piping gel to the icing, if it still won't give you a point add a little more piping gel. Hopefully that will help.

I was thinking piping gel might work. I was trying to make those last night and finially threw in the towel and went back to the petunia instructions. I could not get a tip either and it kept breaking. I figure it was probably b/c I had my royal really thick. I remember succeeding at them in class, but that was about a year and a half ago....

Just made some yesturday: Easter lily directions
Here it is-1/2 c stiff royal icing 1/2 tsp gel. tip #68
touch center well of nail w/ tip & squeeze, pulling petal up & slightly over the inside edge. Decrease pressure as you reach end of petal and pull tip away slowly drawing petal to a point. You should have a nice point and it works for leaves when you need points as long as you add gel it makes it stretch. Hope this works is from wilton class 3 book. Good luck

Use your spatula and open up the end of of your tip slightly. It's possible that it's closed too much.
