I am working on a cake that I need to deliver to a co-worker in the morning. It is to be a fondant covered cake and is about the size of a
half sheet cake. Anyway, we had a huge ice storm over night and I am
taking this cake to work with me and she is going to transfer it to her car in the morning. The problem is that the temperature is going down to 19 degrees tonight and won't be over freexing tomorrow. If that cake is in my car at that temp is it going to ruin the fondant? I am using MMF and Pettinice rolled fondant. Would I be better off to just do this cake in buttercream instead????
TIA
Cindy
I'm bumping myself back up. Can anyone tell me if maybe it would be better to just start over and make the rolled buttercream??? Would that hold up better in the freezing weather???
Cindy
You know, Brides freeze their top tier with fondant on it so I don't know why that would hurt. I am not sure about MMF as I have never used it.
I dont' know if I would leave in to freeze over night...as the cake starts to dethaw the fondant may melt!!
..this may be a silly question..but why not just bring it in out of the car? Perhaps I am missing something?
MrsMissey,
I park in a parking garage across the street from my office... Will be a huge cake and will require up and down icy steps if I try to take it into my office. I don't want to take a chance of dropping it. I slipped down the steps coming out of that garage last year and pulled every muscle in my body trying to keep from landing on my bad knee....
why don't you bring it to work ... have her waiting downstairs to receive the cake bring it inside then later follow the same procedure to take it out ... just a thought
She works during the day. I may just take my chances and try to get it inside the building.. I did make some rolled buttercream, but have never worked with it before. Does anyone know if it should be the same consistancy as MMF. Mine seems a lot softer than MMF.
Cindy
Cindy,
Funny! I just encountered a similar situation. I made a Pooh birthday cake (in my gallery) that my husband was to deliver to a coworker. Problem was, he works 3rd shift and she wasn't coming in 'til 8am next morning. So the MMF covered cake sat in his car overnight with a low of 27F and in her car the next day at 39F. I was a wreck!
But I called her the next day and she told me the cake held up beautifully and tasted good as well.
No problems!
Good luck
Thanks Diane,
I work for City Govt and they never de-ice the sidewalks or steps leading to our building. It is very scary just trying to walk in with nothing in my hands!!! I may go ahead and risk it. I just want this cake to be really nice because this lady has ordered several cakes from me.
Cindy
How did it go, Cindy? I thought about you when I went to get my mail yesterday afternoon and slipped numerous times on my own sidewalk. Had to walk on the grass...or bust my a**!
I actually used rolled buttercream but was a blessing in disguise because she was happier that I used that instead of fondant. Plus, I did end up taking the cake inside. I parked close to the building and went from there. Surprisingly the walk was fairly clear and I walked really slow. It made it into the building, I delivered it to her this morning and she was very pleased. So now it is her baby.....Thank Goodness.
Cindy
P.S.--I work at the CJC--you know where I'm talking about??? They never clear that walk...I think it melted yesterday, except of course on the steps leading up the the building--LOL
I am glad it worked out for you...I had been thinking about ya and wondering what you did!
