For those of you who have used the Whimsical Bakehouse Oreo Cookies and Cream recipe for a filling I was wondering what chocolate cake recipe (or other type) you have used that work out well? I have made the filling and think it tastes great, but I have not made it with a cake that I didn't give away yet.

Thanks so much! icon_smile.gif

Try the Chocolate Layer Cake posted here at CC in the recipes section by Tripletmom...it's a delicious cake!! I think it originally came from epicurious.com. I've made it about 5 times now and decided that it's going to be my 'signature' chocolate cake...lol. icon_lol.gif It's really yummy with the WBH cookies & cream filling, too!

Oh, I forgot to ask you JennT, for the chocolate layer cake by tripletmom what type of coffee do you use? I never drink or make coffee, so do you think when I make this cake I could just drive through and get a fastfood (M's) regular coffee and take it home to use? Do you think that would work out fine?

Thanks for your input. icon_smile.gif

I usually just brew a strong pot of regular coffee on the day I make the cake...then if it's cooled by the time I need to use it I just warm it in the microwave. I wouldn't recommend a fast-food type of coffee, simply because they generally have a very bitter taste, to me, and I'm afraid that might come through in the cake. The finished cake doesn't necessarily scream coffee flavor at you, but I wouldn't want to risk it because it's such a good cake...lol. What I would suggest, since you're not a coffee drinker, is go buy a decent quality instant coffee at the grocery store. (It comes in little jars, usually, on the coffee and tea ailse at my store) Then boil some water (in your teapot, if you have one-makes it easier)...and put a couple of teaspoons of the instant coffee granules in a large cup or bowl and then pour the boiling water over it (enough to make the amount of coffee needed - 1 1/2 cups, I think icon_confused.gif ) and stir until dissolved.

Now, if you have a Starbucks or other coffee shop nearby...I'd go there and just ask for the amount of plain strong coffee that the recipe calls for. They'll probably not have a problem selling it to you. A Grande size might just be the right amount that you need. This would be a more expensive way of 'skinning this chicken', but the high-quality flavor of their coffee would benefit the cake more than say a McD's cup of joe would, lol icon_lol.gificon_razz.gif

I agree that the WBH cookies & cream filling is so good on it's own, it really doesn't matter what you put it with...it'll be yummy!! lol icon_lol.gificon_razz.gif I've used a devil's food box mix, too, & DH devoured it! But let me tell ya...when you put something that crazy yummy with a cake that is equally as yummy....ohhhh mannnn.... icon_razz.gificon_lol.gif It's just out of this world good!! HA! If I weren't so sick of dealing with petit fours all day, I'd be in my kitchen in about 2 minutes whipping up both that filling & a chocolate layer cake to go with it!! lol icon_rolleyes.gificon_lol.gif

Havingfunbaking - I'm glad I was able to help ya! I wanted to give you more than a yes or no answer so it made sense why I said what I said & so you could have some options for the coffee, since your not a drinker of it yourself. I think I might just take my own advice & grap a couple of cups from my favorite coffee joint one day and toss it in that batter!! I'll take ANY excuse to go get a great cup of coffee!! lol icon_razz.gif
