I was thinking of making tiered cake for a birthday. Does the top tier sit directly onto the cake or does it sit on a cake board on top of the cake? If you have a cake board under the top tier, do you still need dowels?

Another idea I had was to make a 'whimsical' cake. I saw the tutorial for making it wonky with the extra icing on the one side, but does the above still apply with the use of a cake board and dowels? I've seen so many of these cakes and thought I would try one out.

TIA

The top tier should be on a cake board. Yes, you will need dowels. If you're only doing a 2 tier cake (sounds smaller), then you can use plastic or wooden dowels no problem. Definitely, some kind of support is needed for whimsical cakes.

Good luck and hope this helps.
