I have not done too many cakes with pillars. I was wondering if you can help me. What size separator plate goes with a cake?

Do I need an 8 inch plate for a 6 inch cake? Adjusting 2 inches for the size of cake? I want to say this is what I was told in class but can't remember.

I personally do not care to use pillars but this is what I have always done. I usually use a 7 inch plate for a 6 inch cake. I think the 8 inch might be a little too bulky. I guess it depends on how big of a border you plan on piping. Hope that helps you some. icon_smile.gif

Like traci said, depends on your border size.

I like having about an inch left from the decorated border to the plate edge...found this out the hard way, my shells kept falling off because it was right at the edge.

I like the separator plate to be 2" larger than the cake...gives enough room for the icing and the border , without worrying.

What Mrs. Missey said because by the time you get your cake iced, and then add a border you need the space. So as you said in your original post, six inch cake, eight inch plate which gives you one inch on each side.
