Well, about 1 1/2 weeks ago I was on here with a massive disaster on my hands asking for help. I was making an x-box cake for my sons 5th birthday and it was going to be my 2nd fondant cake. I decided to go with the chocolate fondant recipe from here and it seriously hated me! It crumbled and ripped with hardly any effot and don't get me started on trying to lift it to cover that cake icon_mad.gif Well I ended up kneading it for a looooong time and worked in probly a 1/2 cup of crisco or more to get it a little more workable. I tried lifting it again to watch it rip into slighty bigger chunks this time. I finally said screw it and patched it together like a bad quilt. My DH looked at it and said "What's that suppose to be? An old beat up piece of luggage? I thought you were making an x-box cake."
It took me over 3 hours of just working with the choc. fondant to get it to this point! You should have seen my kitchen icon_eek.gif there was lil'choc. chunks everywhere! There was so much powdered sugar everywhere that it no longer looked like powdered sugar and more like a lot of drugs exploded. I could just picture my cop friends coming over to the party and arresting me icon_lol.gif

The next morning I peeled all of the old stuff off and started over with regular mmf with a handful of choc. chips mixed in. It worked great! I decorated the whole cake in less time than it did for me to just try working with the choc. fondant the 1st time. Which is good because my son hated the 1st one--he didn't even know what it was. icon_lol.gif

I did clean my kitchen and it was spotless till the guests arrived and trashed it again. The good news is that my cousin who hates anything I do with cakes, she is always trying to cut me down and talk about how horrible they are to family, was there while everyone was bragging. My uncle really hit a nerve with her when he said that the buttercream I use is one of the best he's ever had and my cakes are so moist which is unusual compaired to others (he then noticed she was in the room and back-stepped out icon_lol.gif ) I have a larger family and everyone commented about how good the cake looked and tasted. My cousin commented on how I could have done better though, but for my 2nd fondant cake it's ok.

All in all it went ok. I'll try making the chocolate fondant again but it will be awhile before I attempt it. I forgot to take pictures of how horrid it was before to post like I was going to since I was in crissis mode. The re-done cake is in my photos. Has anyone else ever have this happen?

Man, I wish I would have seen your cake a few months ago. I had a friend who wanted the exact same thing, and I just couldn't get it right. My friend liked it, but I was really unhappy with the whole thing.

I was just reading another thread about someone and their chocolate fondant nightmare (it was in this forum). Must be something with that recipe (I think that the other person said they used the recipe from here too). Maybe it's really moisture sensitive (humidity, etc) or something.

Anyhow... I'm not much help on that chocolate fondant... but I did really like your cake!

Thanks. I was wondering if the humidity got to it maybe. It was starting to warm up some the day before. I know this may sound bad but is nice to know that someone else had issues with it and it just wasn't me icon_lol.gif
