I have a wedding cake due tomorrow..We are expecting some really bad winter precipitation (freezing rain, sleet, snow) The wedding is taking place about 35 miles away. What do I do if I can't take the cake to her? She has already paid me and the cakes are finished. I know that I will refund her money if I am unable to go. And another question is if the wedding is at 3p.m. what time would you guys get to the reception place to start your setup. I have been in panic mode ever since they said that the weather here is going to be BAD!!! I know you guys will calm me down. God knows I need it I am driving my family insane.

Honestly--if it was me, I would leave WAY early to account for possible bad road conditions, etc. I would do everything possible to make sure that I got the cake there. It's a wedding, afterall, not just a bday party or something. Now, I KNOW that you are going to do this, too, but I'm just saying.....

Of course, I also have 2 4-wheel drive vehicles (my dh's truck and my Durango), so it would take a LOT for me to not get it there.

How big is the cake? Do you have a lot of set up and finish decorating to do? I would allow at least a couple of hours if you do. Of course, I always err on the side of too much time, so maybe I'm not the best one to answer this question.

Please post a pic when you are done! I would love to see one!

The cake is 3 tiers 10, 8, 6 and 2 6 in. on the sides...I plan on doing my very best to get there the only decoration is ribbon around the cakes.
I have never in my life drove on icy roads and the wedding is like 10 miles from a main road out in the middle of nowhere and somewhere.

Can you call the reception hall to see if you can at least bring the cake in before the weather hits? Maybe if the roads are still passable you can go back to finish setting up shortly before the wedding?

I would think that the reception hall would accomodate knowing that bad weather is on the way.

Good luck!

I wonder if there is any way that you could take it tonight before the roads get bad.

The other problem is that the reception is being held at someones house..I already talked to the bride and suggested that I go tonight before the weather hits and set up, but I can't because they are having a big party tonight and the bride says that there will be a lot of drinking going on. Alcohol and a tiered cake in my opinion is a diaster waiting to happen. But the bride did say that they may postpone till next weekend. Ok not good I will be in Mexico next weekend. Geez this is getting worse by the minute.

Dang!!! Maybe this is a sign? (just kidding!)

Hopefully everything will work out just fine. What is her plan if they postpone? Does she HONESTLY think that you will be making another whole cake? Obviously she will have to pay for that.

Hmmmmm--if they postpone, maybe you could freeze it? I've never done that with a fully decorated cake.

In any event--I agree with everyone else--go as early as possible, before the roads get really bad.

Hope it works out for you!

Leave early and get it to them 1st thing before the weather gets too bad. If they postpone, it's they're problem. They ordered it for delivery for tomorrow not next weekend. If the cake is delivered as ordered it will be their responsibility to refrigerate it or do what they need to with it. If they refuse delivery it's their loss. Good thing you got the payment up front!

Good Luck!

Cute.

Find someone else to drive with you. You ride, they drive. Even better if you can use a 4WD vehicle. This is not the time to learn winter driving.

I would say to try to go deliver it tonight. Maybe they can put it in a separeate room than the party.

My second idea would be to deliver as early as possible and take someone to drive you there.

Good luck and I hope all turns out well! icon_smile.gif

First of all, I never knew Tennessee got that cold...but, to answer your question, I would go as EARLY as possible. Several years ago, I had to deliver a wedding cake to a reception the day of the biggest blizzard NYC had had at that time. The directions were very poor, we got lost, the car skidded on the ice several times...we were almost in an accident. I arrived to the reception hall VERY VERY LATE,,,and as a result I lost a lot of money and could have lost my life in an accident.

Yesterday it was 70 and now it is in the 30's...But I am sure next week it will be in the 60's again...Hubby is going to drive me tomorrow so thank god I got that covered...It just started misting outside..Maybe all it will do is rain.

TMM i'm in your region, but i'm in NW corner of georgia, almost in chattanooga so I know what you mean. they did say that IN THE MORNING it would be a wintry mix, but in the afternoon it would be rain. I don't know if that helps you or not, but it probably will just rain in the afternoon hours when the temps are higher. The weather has been weird lately, we got snow like 5 days ago, and now a 70 degree day, then back to freezing again..YUCK. I wish you luck, but you don't need it...you'll make it, and it will be fine icon_smile.gif

Thanks guys for all the replies. Well the roads were absolutely horrible the last ten miles was a solid sheet of ice curvy and hilly. Hubby went with me,but made me a nervouse wreck he is driving and eating chicken nuggets at the same time.
The cake is under my pictures if you want to take a look.

And yes there was a cake diaster last night at 11p.m I was moving my cakes to the table. When I picked up my 10 in. yep fell right out of my hands.Well actually I tripped and it fell out of my hands. All I could do is stand there. Do you know how hard it is to get buttercream out of carpet. So off to the supermarket I go, of course no french vanilla cake mix...Off to Wal Mart I go ta da they have it. (And I only go to WalMart out of desparation) Come home no eggs, CRAP!!! Off to Wal Mart again (Because Kroger is now closed) made another 2- 10 inch cakes and new buttercream to boot...Got to bed at 4 a.m.

You did a great job!! I'm glad that you got it there safe and sound. I would have been going NUTS if it was my dh eating and driving on the ice! Yikes!

Lovely work! Congrats.
