I broke down and bought a Kitchen Aid Mixer today. I got an unbelievable deal. A friend who works for Pottery Barn got it for me. It's the 5 quart Artisan. It mixes much better than my Sunbeam stand, but I am still going to use them both. I thought I was getting the pink one, but got home and realized I had gotten white. Oh well, it matches my other mixer. Anyway, a couple of observations....I think it is a little weird that the speed control is on the back side. It makes it a little ackward. Plus, I accidentally moved the control over too far and had powdered sugar all over the kitchen. Anyway, once I get used to it, I know I am going to love it.....Just wanted to share.....

Congratulations on your purchase! I have had an Artisan for many years and just recently upgraded to the Professional. I love them both and use them both at the same time when time is short.

I've already made 2 double batches of buttercream icing, 1 batch of WBH buttercream and a cake. So, I guess it is broken in. I hadn't gotten one because I was very hesitant to spend 250.00 for a mixer. I got mine for 140.00. I was so excited I couldn't believe it!!! So even though it is not the color I really wanted, I'm not going to gripe.

Plus, I had 3 cake orders this weekend, so they are paying for it...

Congratulations!! I have had mine for almost 12 years. It was actually a Christmas gift from my husband (before we were married). I don't know what I would do without it. For years I have been dubbed the cookie ladyby my friends and family, but this past year my KA has definitely gotten a work out with my cake decorating obsession. icon_lol.gif I really want to upgrade to a bigger one. Maybe someday.

Once you start using your Kitchen Aid you will wonder how you ever lived without it! I've had my Artisan for a year and I use it ALL the time...cookies, cakes, frostings...whatever can be mixed gets thrown in my bright red KA mixer!

As for the speeds being in the "back". Try adjusting its placement on the counter. I have mine placed so that the curved front of the mixer (the part that has the K.A. name on the curved edge) is directly in front of me on the counter. This way the speed controls are on my left side and the locking mechanism is on my right side. That way you don't have the speeds in the "back".

Getting an extra bowl for your mixer is also very helpful. I thought that was unnecessary at first, THEN I started doing different mixing jobs at the same time (cakes in one, frosting in the other or different batches of cookie doughs for the holidays) and it was great!

Have fun with your Kitchen Aid!

I want one of those... always have. BUT, I must wait until the Sunburn craps out which I'm thinking is going to be pretty soon since it seems to work really hard (squeels and gets really hot) when making the icing.

Lucky you!! icon_smile.gif

I have a brand new Kitchen Aid mixer sitting in the garage.
I won it at lasts years Wedding Cake Competition at the L.A. County Fair.
It's fire engine red.
Problem is I already have one that's pretty new.
I can't decide if I should sell it or hang onto it in case mine busts.
I wonder how long these mixers last before breaking.
Do you think I should just sell this one and go shoe shopping icon_biggrin.gif ?
What would you do?
