Hello,

I am making the GIRLS RULE cake from the Wilton 2006 Yearbook. It looks like a lot of fun, but I have four kids 5 and under an therefore not a lot of time. I was wondering, how early can i make the fondant decorations. Will they stick to my fondant covered cake after they are dry? I thought about making a few every evening for about a week or so.
Thanks

I think they should be fine as long as they dont start cracking. Just use a little butter cream or royal to add the decorations later. But i'm no expert.

Has anyone ever done the decorations a week or so ahead and added them to the fresh fondant?

If the decorations just lay across the cake, a dab of water on the back will make them stick. The decorations should not crack if you make them ahead of time.

These decorations need to stick to the sides, still okay?

Some fondant decorations have to "bend" over an edge or something like that in which case you would want to do them fresh. However, if the fondant pieces are going to be flat (on top or the sides) it will be fine! My kids are 4, 3 and 17 months so I know what you mean! Do as much as you can ahead of time!

I have done fondand cut-outs a week or 2 in advance and they have done just fine. If they need to be 'stuck' to other fondand just use a little vanilla.

MommaLlamma-
You can do them in advance. Just store them inside of a sealed container, without touching each other. If you want them to be stiff, dry them first before storing in the airtight container. If they need to have a slight curve to them (for use on the side of a cake) place them on the side of the cake's pan and let them take on the form before storing. If you need to make them stick to the side of the cake, just brush a little water on the back of them with a paint brush or your finger.

You can cut them out well in advance and let them dry. Don't seal them up airtight or they won't dry - unless of course you don't want them to. My crabs for my bushel of crabs cake and leaves for my basket of leaves cake were made well in advance as well as the loops for my centerpiece wedding cakes (the pic seems to have disappeared from the site for the centerpiece wedding cakes). Anyhow, make away!
