Welcome to Cake Central!! Congratulations on starting your own business. I haven't made a wedding cake yet, but am looking forward to doing one in December for a friend. I think it is a terrifying thought, especially the first one. Hopefully after the first one it will be easier.

There are so many wonderful decorators on this site and they are more than willing to share tips and ideas.

Cindy

Wow! We are a lot alike!! I'm 19 too and working on starting my own lil business!! icon_smile.gif Very cool. I too have mainly only decorated for family members but am now starting to have other people ask for cakes. The first thing i did was created a web page and told everyone i knew about it, and then they told other people. I have had a lot of people ask me about it and so far it's been the best thing to get my name out. I wish you the best of luck!!

thanx so much you guys!!...i didnt expect to get replies that quickly...the website thing is a good idea, but im afraid that i will get too many orders (that sounds totally conceited but not meant to be lol) and i wont be able to handle them, becasue i am operating my business own of my own home for the time being. but i am so terrified of making a wedding cake. I hope someone is there to take a picture of my face the second someone asks me to make a wedding cake lol...the biggest cake i have ever made was for my mamaw's 56th birthday and i use boxed cake mixes but make my own icing. her cake took 6 cake mixes and 58 million tons of icing (okay, a little exagerating there lol) I used square cake pans and make 3 seperate gift box cakes. 1 with 3 layes 1 with 2 layer and 1 with one layer adn it was all whipped icing and i made ribbons and bows out of red and blue icing. thayt thing was massive lol..but on major thing i am worried about is pricing, i have no idea what to charge for these cakes??!!!...any ideas?? thanx you guys!!

Savanna, WELCOME!!!!!!!! You are in the right place for support , tips and a good laugh occasionally! There are more "seasoned pro's: than myself about... but I'll give you a few little bits of advice that I know to be true since I have opened my shop and have been doing this professionally for a couple of years.

1. With wedding cakes...don't wait till someone orders one to make one...do a practice run or two and feel comfortable with constructing the cake before you ever attempt a paid one.

2. Don't invest in 1000 character pans, get good basic round and square and hex and hearts and possibly ovals to begin with in all sizes.

3.Donate a few cakes here and there to get your name out there and do a few wedding cakes for little more than cost to get people to try out the "new" baker. Word of mouth business has been good to me.

4.On pricing it is going to depend a lot on your area and what the competition is like. But as a good rule of thumb $2.00 a serving is a good place to start ( with simple buttercream and VERY basic trimmings) until you feel comfortable in setting your prices according to your skill. Fondant usually about twice as much... I start fondant designs about 4.00 per serving.

Hope some of this is helpful and if I can ever be of assistance, just give me a yell!

Welcome SavannahJane--
THis is definitely the place to ask questions, so don't worry about too many. I have learned more from this website than I did from 2 Wilton classes, and I've been decorating for over 20 years.
