O.k. I am having major problems here. I made a fondant bow way back when for a baby shower cake, it was a last minute change to the cake and I made about a day or two in advance and it was dry enough to adhere onsite but not enough to travel with. So I basically making the same cake which the girl is picking up and driving about two hours away. I plan to leave all the small pieces off for her to place on it when she gets there. But I made the bow three days ago out of 50/50 fondant and gumpaste last night it was still soft, so last night I decided I should make one with straight gumpaste followed the directions in the tutorial and today it is still just as soft, could it be the plastic wrap I used as forms, I usually us cotton balls with cornstarch but didnt want to face the mess, now the cake is due tomorrow and I have a soft bow that I REALLY need to attach for her and it is too soft to transport. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I may be able to push her off till Friday, but I dont know and I am in a panic with no backup plan. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

is it a white bow? How big? Could you in a pinch go to Walmart or any of the hobby stores that sell cake supplies and buy a bow already made? she doesn't have to know. I wouldn't do that all the time. But in a pinch.....

Do you have a fan or a hair dryer set on cool and let that blow on it for awhile? Maybe that will speed up the drying!?

Do you have a good cake supply place nearby? In a pinch I've bought pre-made bows from my local store. Good luck!

(Maybe you're making the bows too thick? When I did my last one with gumpaste (the pink cake in my photos) the gumpaste was hard and transportable by the next morning and I didn't use any seran-wrap for forms.)

I learned this trick on CC -

Put all your pieces in the oven with only the light on (NO HEAT) and leave over night! In the morning your pieces will be dry. It works and it is the only way I dry fondant now.

I think The plastic is preventing your pieces to dry... I use plastic to keep the moist on my fondant when I need it. Could you replace the plastic for cotton balls or tissue paper? and put the pieces under a fan, thats works for me... look luck!!!

If the bow is not white, place foil or a cookie sheet on the top rack to block the light on the bow; otherwise, it could fade.

Also, put a sticky note on the oven "on" knob that says, "No!" I speak from experience!!

Please let me know how the oven thing worked - tried it once and my piece sort of melted - but I KNOW I did something wrong, maybe preheated the oven to 200 then shut it off.

I really want to know this works!

You want a COLD oven. I do my fondant pieces a day or so before I bake so my oven has not been on at all. Smaller pieces of fondant like curly cues (fondant wrapped around a straw) I will just put in the oven (with the light on) for a couple of hours and take them out. Stiff as a board. icon_smile.gif

I went back and found my post and wanted to give Vreeke credit as she was the one that told me about the oven trick.

Never had a problem with the bulb fading the color but that does make sense because I have had pieces fade just with regular light. Will have to keep this in mind.

THank you all for the advice No I can't buy the bow, it is pink. I made it just like the tutorial so I made it very thin. I think it is the plastic wrap because I went home on my break and the middle seems to be drying I think I am going back to the good old cotton balls and cornstarch. Oven will most definetly be hot today to I will have to try a fan.

You all are great !!!!!!!

Thank you,
Shannon
