I am dying to learn how to make these. I have a few questions. Can you get this rice paper at Micheals? I've never seen them there..but never really looked either. Is it an online ordering thing? Also, this food coloring printer... is it an actual printer I need to buy or is it edible ink for my regular computer printer? Where do you find these things???

Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

Those butterflies are what brought me to this site!! icon_biggrin.gif I found out yesterday that our local grocery store will sell me sheets of the rice paper, very exspensive though, $6. a sheet. Then I will use food colouring to paint them. There is a site that everyone here directed me to and you can get blank rice paper very cheaply or you can order preprinted butterflies ready for you to decorate. The site is sugarcraft.som
Here is the link to the butterflies:

Hope that helps....sorry I don't know the answers about the printers etc. I am just learning about it all too!! Good luck

Ok thanks! They have good prices too! It's tempting to buy them already made.. but then I have no bragging rights! LOL! What to do, what to do...

For the edible printer, you want to get a seperate printer that you can use only with the edible ink. Other wise you will have regular ink on the printer head.

Hmmm, I didn't know I'd need a seperate printer... I'm wondering if it's worth it... maybe I should just buy them at sugarcraft.com.

i would think that you could probably trace over a regular print out. just put your rice paper over it & use edible markers to trace the colors.

Yeah I probably could, I just thought it would be so much easier and could make so much more the easy way... Oh well.

I saw someone on this site that used a butterfly rubber stamp to stamp the image of the butterfly (with all the small details) right onto the rice paper and then just simply colored it in......maybe that's an option for you??

I love the butterfly effect and I have been practicing on rice paper with non-toxic pens. I am in Maryland, and I purchased rice paper, $2.39 for 10 sheets from a cake supply store. I don't know if they are the best type of paper, of if there are different qualities. Practicing is helping figure out what colors to put togethe and you can improvise on what designs or shapes you personally want to do.

I too just purchased a pack of 10 sheets at my local cake supply store for $1.59. I am tracing over my design with food pens. I love it!! I do have a question about which side to use on the paper...it seems there is a rough side and a smooth. Any ideas?

Did y'all happen to see the Sugar Rush episode where the lady was making butterflies by outlining in white chocolate on what I think was parchment, letting that dry, then filling it in with color gel or something like that? She let that dry, peeled the paper off of it and inserted the wings into a body of royal icing. I'm seriously wanting to try that for a wedding cake I have to do in May but wondered if anyone else had tried it?

I guess there are two threads going on buttefly's, but you can also use the edible food markers that you can get at Michaels or JoAnns to draw them as well. I just placed the rice paper over the images and drew them that way. It was a tad time consuming, but they turned out really well.

Do you have a Bulk Barn location near you? They sell them for $0.45 a sheet.
