Okay.....here It Is!!! And It's Okay To Laugh....a Little!!

Here is my first ever almost properly decorated cake!!!
The first picture is from last night trying to get a smooth coat. Next is a pic of the cake, then a closer picture of the cake and finally a picture of a rose. Not quite sure how many pictures you can post at one time so I'm listing the photo's in order.
Now.....lessons learned hahaha
#1...you really do need a high turntable, a bent handle spreader and a proper stand (foiled cardboard) to put the cake on
#2...never do a cake with a "homemade" deprived teenager around, he doesn't remember the days when mom actually did make breads, preseves, pies, cakes etc.
#3...I need bigger bowls and a free standing mixer. There was icing everywhere!!!
#4...I need lots of practice with this and to focus on one element at a time
#5...I need to relax....it is only icing and it doesn't move like a paint brush
It was fun though. I honestly don't think this cake is edible though...there is soooo much icing on it. Even hubby, who this is for, will have a hard time with all the sweetness. I'll be anxious when he cuts it to see just how thick the icing is in places!! LOL
Anyway...just thought I would show you my very first attempt. I still have to try royal icing flowers, really anxious to try the candy clay things etc. etc. but the smell of sugar in this house right now is nauseating!!!
Have a laugh and please feel free to critique as that is how I will learn. Thanks for looking

I think it looks great!!! Your roses are fantastic.I have seen decoraters that have decorated for years who still can't make a nice rose!! About the sweetness of the icing....you will eventually find a recipe that you really like and will use all the time.It took me 4 years.Great cake!!!
Awesome job! Looks good to me! Your roses look really good...especially for your first time. Way to go! Pat yourself on the back -- your well on your way to greatness!

If my first "properly" decorated cake had looked that good, I'd still be doing cartwheels! Good for you!
. . . in my third year and still getting icing everywhere . . .
You did a great job-as far as the sugar smell-it's HONEYS BAKERY-EVERYTHIN MADE WITH THE SWEETNESS OF LOVE!!! HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!
I am sure DH will love it!! Congratulations!!
Where is the cake we get to laugh at? The one you posted is beautiful! Great job. The roses look really nice.

Great cake, great roses. Wish I could claim something that nice and creative as my first cake.
Keep up the great work!
I wish my first cake even came close to yours. I wish I could make roses like you. They are beautiful! Great job.
When I first read your post I thought, ok maybe we'll have a quick laugh. But your cake is nothing TO laugh at! I think it's beautiful!! I only hope when I get up the nerve to do MY first cake, it turns out HALF as good!!
Your cake is great Now if you seen my first cake that would be something to laugh at. Keep up the good work.
Wow! That's great for a first cake!! I don't think anyone could look at that & laugh!! It's beautiful.
I think it looks great! I think you did a great job!! I would never had know it was your first.
Well hubby loved the cake!! I was REALLY surprised once it was cut that the icing wasn't super thick! I really thought I had put way too much on it. He also said it wasn't overly sweet as I had thought it would be. Kids thought it was great too It's half gone now so I guess that means it was a success hahaha I don't eat sweets so I couldn't give an opinion...the smell of it was enough for me!!!
Running into town today and will stop at Michael's to take a look at thing's for a wish list. I know for sure I want to get a bigger ruffle maker and spatula. I hope to make and play with some of the candy clay soon. I have all the ingredients, just need the time.
Thank you all so very much for the wonderful comments and encouragements. I don't know how you guys do such incredible works.
My neighbour (the one that used to do cake decorating) and was thrilled with my attempt! She said I should use the left over frosting to make more roses in different colours and freeze them for the future.
Thank you all again, you have been so very kind and welcoming
It looks great!! I'm too embarrassed to even THINK about posting my very first cake before I took a class. Very nice job.
Angie
WOW! You did a great job! I've tried to make roses once, but they ended up looking like cabbages! LOL! Congratulations that you've managed roses just fine! (little envious lol!)
